Hello. I'm a senior in high school now, and I'm interested in majoring in Chinese as an undergrad. Which colleges have the best undergraduate Chinese programs?

Stanford, Berkeley, USC/UCLA all have decent Chinese programs
All UCs have exchange programs, you can study at PKU for a year and earn UC credits

UC Berkeley Institute for East Asian Studies
http://ieas.berkeley.edu/
http://ealc.berkeley.edu/

However, UCs have low admit rates for OOS students.

Any school in a highly Chinese-influenced area would be good.

Try schools in or around San Francisco.

Harvard, Princeton and especially Yale have good Chinese programs too.

Also note that very few schools have an actual Chinese major - most call it Asian Studies or Asian Languages and Literature.

If you are interested in going overseas , the University of Cambridge in the UK offers an exceptionally strong 4-year BA degree in Chinese studies. The 4-year Chinese program at Oxford University is also an excellent choice and probably better than any Chinese major offered in the United States.

Thanks for all the replies. Nah, I don't think I'll apply to Oxford or Cambridge, though I've never really considered it before. Just seems kind of strange for an American to go there, since the US has so many great schools.

Cornell's program includes a semester in Beijing and a semester in Washington, D.C. and appears to be the only one to do so:

A Unique New Undergraduate Major at Cornell University

Gabriel Lopez ’06, Policy Analyst, American Chamber of Commerce, China
"...I now realize how fortunate the CAPS students are to be given the opportunity to interact with the leading experts on China, work with some of the most influential and dynamic players in China, and have such a unique network of contacts at their disposal. The skills and contacts they acquire along the way will pave their China successes in the future."

"The three towers-Cornell University's McGraw Tower, Washington D.C.'s Washington Monument, and Peking University's Boya Tower - are landmarks on the three sites where students will pursue Cornell’s unique new undergraduate major in China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CAPS).

CAPS is a program designed to train future leaders who are equipped to address the inevitable challenges and negotiate the delicate complexities in US-China relations. With four years of intensive Chinese language training and two semesters of externships in Washington D.C. and Beijing respectively, the unique and ambitious program offers CAPS majors unprecedented pre-professional training mapped onto a solid Cornell liberal arts education.

CAPS majors will be in high demand for entry- or higher – level positions in consultancies and other businesses, government and public service, diplomacy and journalism, financial services, etc. An undergraduate CAPS degree also readily prepares one for graduate study in law, business and other disciplines with a focus on China.

The first CAPS majors (Class of ’08) began taking courses in the fall of 2005. By the time they graduate in May 2008, they will have studied three years in Ithaca, one semester in Washington, D.C., and one semester in Beijing.

Aims of the CAPS Major
A rigorous Cornell liberal arts education
Four years of Intensive Chinese Language Training
Critical skills through on-campus as well as off-campus courses in history, politics, society, economics, and foreign relations
Professional experience with some of the most influential and dynamic practitioners with China related experience"

^CAPS and FALCON are definitely two programs at Cornell people should check out if they're interested in Chinese.

I would also check out Princeton in Beijing, which is very popular among Chinese language students and East Asian Studies majors, and is a co-operative program between Princeton and Beijing Normal University.

collegehelp, can you shed a bit more light on that list you posted? I see the schools are ranked alphabetically, but have you any indication of the relative strengths of the programs at these institutions?

If you're interested in a smaller (LAC) environment, check out Asian Studies at Pomona College http://asianstudies.pomona.edu/.

Although Pomona has only 375 students per class, the Asian Studies department has 23 faculty members providing 80 courses (including cross-registering in the other Claremont Colleges).

Study abroad is included, and you can choose to live in the Oldenborg dorm, a unique residence hall where students are immersed in Chinese and Japanese, among other languages.

The Pacific Basin Institute, which came to Pomona in 1997, sponsors a continuing series of conferences, workshops and lectures featuring scholars and public figures from Pacific Rim nations.

Penn has a spectacular East Asia department.

There are TWO majors designed for people who might want to do "Chinese":

-EALC (East Asian Languages & Civilizations) Chinese track
-EAST (East Asian area STudies)

The former focuses more on cultural studies whereas the latter is focused on more contemporary issues like Asian politics, economics, etc. The choice is yours.

Penn's Chinese (and east asia studies as a whole) is simply excellent.

Thanks to all of you for the advice! I'll definately take it into consideration in my college search.
