I am a current high school senior attending a state school next fall. My goal is to attend a top 14 law school and possibly transfer to an Ivy-League or similar quality institution my junior year of college. What should I be doing now, specifically with internships / extracurriculars / volunteering to prepare for and get into law school?
Law schools don’t care about internships. Just keep that GPA nice and high. You should, however, intern at a law firm anyways to make sure it’s something you’re actually interested in. Law and people’s perception of law often differ greatly. Best to find that out as soon as possible.
Do what interests you. Extracurriculars won’t matter for law school admissions purposes.
Studying for the LSAT. That’s the only extracurricular I’d worry about. Your GPA + LSAT is all most schools care about.
Aside from grades and test scores, consider buying horn books and other books in topics that interest you from the law school bookstore, Even as very proficient reader, I found reading these books challenging. The style of writing and referencing were very different from what I was accustomed to reading. It just took.a bit more time and rereading, but was odd initially.
Strongly recommend against buying law books as an undergrad. You don’t know what you’re doing, and even if you can figure it out you certainly can’t figure out how your future professors will apply cases.
Activities that help you analyze and respond verbally could be helpful. College debate or model UN, for example.
