I'm a European student looking to go abroad for university to study graphic design. I've done a lot of research and and pored over many a world ranking and have come to the conclusion that the world's top universities in this field are all located in the US, with a handful of equally strong ones in the UK.

I would like to attempt to get into a strong university because I realize that this field is not exactly the easiest to find work in. However, I feel powerfully drawn to quite a few European countries that don't seem to have outstanding higher education in this field on a world level. Also, I haven't been able to find a European ranking of universities with a focus on art/design. There are many out there that rank all such universities in the world, and equally many that list those in the UK or US.

I guess what I would like to know can be broken down into three questions, which are the following: Which are the best universities for graphic design in the world? Which are the best in Europe? Which are the best in Europe excluding the UK?

My son-in-law just finished his Masters in Graphic Design (specializing in Computer Aided Graphics) at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. They also have an UG degree in Graphic Design but it is extremely competitive to be accepted. He was accepted to a number of programs but felt very lucky to be able to attend Otis. During his time there, he did an exchange program for 3 months with a program in Denmark, and I know he felt that it was also a very strong program. He also did a recent short trip to a program in Belgium where he was a presenter and they have invited him back next month to do another presentation. I know he was impressed with both the programs in Denmark and in Belgium, but especially the one in Denmark. I don’t know the names of the 2 programs in Europe but will try to find out. You might look at Otis in the meantime as it is very highly regarded, but expensive.
