Best US Colleges for Marine Science Undergraduate

Hi.

does anyone which famous colleges are well known for their marine science programs?

ben

University of Miami in Florida. It’s not extremely prestigious, but its pretty good :)

Famous colleges?

Do you mean “famous to the general public” or “famous in the marine sciences field”?

If the latter . . . check out UC Santa Cruz

Great facilties, wide access to other schools’ and programs’ resources

You might want to start your research at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Around here UNC-Wilmington (UNCW) is a very school.

My D is a freshmen at the University of Miami and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Miami is a top 50 school and their Marine Program is among the best in the country. My D was given 38 credits for her APs at Miami and can now triple major in Marine Science/Biology/Chemistry. They have a large and very active scuba club and she was able to get dive certified already. They even have scientific diving classes!

What I LOVE about Miami is that they have very small classes, taught by Professors and really encourage the kids to do research.

Here is a link to the Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Miami:

My D will be doing research next semester at the National Aplysia Resource which is located across from RSMAS on Viginia Key, she is so excited!

Miami gives great Merit aid. My D is on half tuition scholarship and has a guaranteed transfer to Cornell for next year which she would not dream of using. She LOVES MIAMI!!!

PM me if you want more info.

If you’re considering Duke, they have a marine lab in Beaufort, NC that you should check out as well: [Duke University Marine Lab — Duke Marine Lab](Duke University Marine Lab | Nicholas School of the Environment)

Elsewhere in NC, I think (as ncmentor said) UNCW has a strong program in marine sciences.

UC San Diego is very good for marine science.

How about small schools (less than 4000) for marine science?
anyone looking at Eckerd?

Both UT-Austin and Texas A&M have marine science departments with labd and teaching facilities on the gulf coast (UT’s Marine Science Institute is in Port Aransas, with classes offered both there and at the main UT campus, and A&M’s is in Galveston).

Marine Science is a multidisciplinary science, and it would help narrow your search if you knew which aspect (zoology, botany, microbiology, chemistry, geology, physical oceanography) you were most interested in. You’ll end up with all of them on your plate, but some schools are stronger in certain areas than others.
