Best way to become an SAT Tutor?

I'm a grad student. I got a 1210 out of 1600 when I took the SAT's in high school.

I retook it recently using a practice test and scored (by averaging the ranges they give): a 720 reading, 705 writing, and 430 math.

(I didn't study for the math at all, and knew none of the formulas. I've done well in college math classes so I think I can get my score up with some practice.)

My goal is to become a private tutor. My friend does it and he got his score up from around the same as mine to 2400 by practicing. He recommended that I work for a tutoring company first and then after a while branch out on my own.

Would you guys agree? Do you think its possible that I could start tutoring privately, for just reading and writing soon? Or would you discourage me from doing that? What is the best path for someone like me to become a private tutor? (Tutoring on my own without a company behind me)

Any advice would be appreciated.

You can’t get a score of 705…

Yeah, I know, I’m working on my scores still. I can go up to 800 with both.

I’m just trying to find out what the best strategy would be for becoming a tutor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Working with a tutoring company can be helpful in that it gives you experience and a sense of how others are doing it. You will end up developing your own methods and materials in response to what you see is working (and not working), but it might be tough to do that without at least seeing what else is out there. Finally you may find it difficult to get clients without any experience and since the tutoring companies find the students for you that solves that problem.

You should also go through the entire blue book at some point (or at least the Reading sections) so that you are familiar with the content and aren’t looking up answers while working with students. Good luck!

LOL 705. If you can get a score that’s virtually impossible, then I’m positive your already the best tutor in the world. Good luck.

As he stated clearly, “(by averaging the ranges they give),” he averaged the score ranges to get a 705. Obviously he didn’t take the SAT and get a 705 in any section… Idk why some of you guys are so fixated over the 705 that you won’t answer his damn question.

Good thing you guys didn’t live before 1970, when SAT scores were reported to the nearest point (yes, you could get a 799).

OP, I don’t see why you couldn’t do private tutoring in CR and Writing. You’ll need to practice with real tests until you feel very comfortable with the topics and format and are scoring above 750 regularly. The mistakes you make should be helpful in terms of teaching.

The tutoring company route has the advantage of getting access to students quickly, so it may be a very useful experience. You could probably do both; it will probably take some time to build up enough students for private tutoring anyway.

If you want to tutor, tutor. You probably know enough to do well on the test, and since you are in graduate school you may have experience teaching.

The hardest part will be finding clients.

Step 1: Create an offer… what will you offer, how will it work, how much will you charge

Step 2: Identify your market … you teach kids but sell to parents. Where do they go to school, who do they currently study with, and how can you get where they are.

Step 3: Be where they are & sell your stuff.

You should join the LinkedIn Group “Test Prep Professionals” run by Kevin Organisciak.

Treat it like a business and you should be able to get a few paying clients. If you do a good job with them, they will recommend you to their friends.

Best of luck

I was looking for information on a search tutoring and the cost. I found a page while searching on how to become one for an SAT tutor. I thought I would add it here in case some wants to look into it.
