That's the best way to improve one's writing style? Reading many newspapers? The reason I ask is because I'm going to be the managing editor of my school's studentrun newspaper this coming year. I consider myself a decent writer already but would like to improve upon my skills.

Read and write!!! Having other people edit your pieces helps, too. But, the only way to improve, really, is to practice =)

The best way is to read the best writers in the country -- writers you admire.
You also improve your writing style by writing, writing, and writing.
Editing also will help you be a better writer.
It's also a good idea to talk to writers you admire (including student writers) and ask for their tips.
Poynter Institute (the top place that professional journalists go to for instruction) has excellent tips, too, on its website.

Read some of the posts on CC!! There has to be some good writers here who have taken AP Eng Lang & Lit.

Listen to how people speak, and what they speak, to get fluent in the language, and some frequently used puns, idioms, and figurative prose.

And as always, read books. Keep a diary perhaps.

Especially when writing for a newspaper, just remember to be very direct. Say what you need to say in the most clear and effective manner. After you write your articles, read over them and delete information that isn't neccessary. Also try to eliminate wordiness whenever possible. Simple is better.

Oh, yes... be concise!
