Im planning to take the sat 2 math 2 in june 2015, I have not really started to study yet. How many months do you really need to prepare? What books or resources do you suggest? What else works for you?
Any other additional info is appreciated
Thanks!!!
This really depends on your mathematics background. Take a practice/diagnostic test first and see for yourself.
What math classes have you taken so far? What grades did you receive in them?
@southernbelle16
Im a junior in highschool
Geometry honors - B
Alg2 honors - A
Currently precalc honors - A
@MITer94 yes definitely, do you have a certain resource for a practice test that youd recommend?
@Happysteve sorry, I’m not the person to ask (math was/is my strong suit). The College Board website has several sample Math II questions that you can try, and they should be similar in difficulty and style.
@HappySteve okay so you have had all of the classes you need for it, which is good. Try these books:
1 - I have heard Barron's makes a good book. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/barrons-sat-subject-test-math-level-2-with-cd-rom-11th-edition-richard-ku-ma/1118619935?ean=9781438074535
2 - Dr. Chung's book is good too I heard. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dr-john-chungs-sat-ii-math-level-2-2nd-edition-dr-john-chung/1115469726?ean=9781481963213
3 - I am using this brand's book to prep for the SAT II Bio. I really enjoy it. It teaches you the content more. Here is the one for the SAT II Math Level 2 http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dr-john-chungs-sat-ii-math-level-2-2nd-edition-dr-john-chung/1115469726?ean=9781481963213
I’ve heard mixed reviews about Dr. Chung’s on CC, but you probably know more than I do.
Basically, exercise caution when buying third-party test preparation books, because some of them are awful in terms of the quality of the problems and explanations.
From my own/my friends’ experiences, around 1-2 months of prep, more or less depending on how much you’ve retained from your previous math classes/your math skills. Barron’s and Dr. Chung’s are good books - they overprepare you but you typically do a good amount better on the real test. Prep from those books will help you with getting the last few, harder questions on the test.
Just get the books, take practice tests, and review incorrect answers and any topics you’re unsure about, and you should be set.
The highest level math on the Math II test are Law of Cosines and Law of Sines, which are both covered in Precalc. I would also know how to do geometry (3,4,5 triangles, how to calculate areas and volumes, etc.). If you get these two topics, and you understand how to do SAT I Math, you should be fine.
