Best ways to study for the ACT/SAT

What are the best ways to study for the SAT/ACT? For the past few months, I did literally tons of practice tests, but didn't think I improved much, in fact I feel I got worse at it. My school is in North Dakota so we didn't have any SAT prep classes, however, I bought many prep books from Kaplan, Barron's, Princeton Review etc. Do they really help that much? I got a 29 on the ACT the first time, and now I'm studying for the test in September. My goal is to get a score around 32. As for the SAT, I did some prep work but I haven't taken a real one yet. I decide to take the SAT along with my ACT in the fall of my senior year (Procrastination, I know). Currently I just need a few tips on studying for these standardized tests, they can be a real pain.
Thanks for the feedback!

Take a practice test to see where you are now and set a goal. The best way for you to study depends on what you need to work on.
