Best/Worst of AP/IB/Honors English?

Worst book we read was The Awakening by Kate Chopin

Best is a tie between Into the Wild by John Krakauer and The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende

I'm in IB english 11 :) currently, we're wrapping up the Latin American unit with Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Worst: House of Mango Street.
Best: The Glass Menagerie, A Doll’s House, and Of Mice and Men.

I haven’t read a book for English in years.

Worst: The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible

Best: Night, In Cold Blood, The Great Gatsby

Worst: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Scarlet Letter, Wuthering Heights, The Grapes of Wrath, The Inferno

Best: The Catcher in the Rye, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, The Tortilla Curtain, The Great Gatsby, The Canterbury Tales, The Road

Everyone loves To Kill a Mockingbird, but it’s so stereotypical and predictable.

Worst: Grapes of Wrath, Billy Budd, To Kill a Mockingbird
Best: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, The Sound and the Fury

Worst: Screwtape Letters, The Scarlet Letter, that book set at an all boys boarding school in WW2 where the gay guy dies

Best: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail, Huckleberry Finn, Uncle Tom’s Cabin

I’m one of the few people at my school that actually reads most of the book and doesn’t just Sparknote the whole thing.

sophomore year
worst: The Sun Also Rises
best: Winesburg, Ohio

How is TKAM stereotypical? That’s the point…

I guess Atticus is supposed to be the stereotypical good father, and the trial is a stereotype of Southern racism, but there’s really no surprise in the story, which makes it bland despite the good lessons it contains. It’s much better for middle school kids I think than high schoolers who already understand that sort of thing and the history of it.

English 10 Honors
Worst: In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. It was a summer reading book this year. Terrible.
Best: Death Be Not Proud. Another summer reading book.

We’ve read only three books this year in class. We read that many over the summer. :/

@emorylegacy: why is the sun also rises your least favorite book? I read it last summer and absolutely loved it! is it because of the ending?

Best: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, Being Perfect by Anna Quindlen
Worst: Walden by Thoreau, Through the Tunnel by Doris Lessing,

hsgirl93, you read The Lovely Bones for English? jealous. I just read that on my own and LOVED it. haven’t seen the movie though

Worst: The Awakening by Kate Chopin
Best: The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner

^^ Agreed!

Worst: Antigone - Sophocles.

There were no best books.

Worst: O Pioneers!, Paradise Lost, Heart of Darkness.
Best: Of Mice and Men, Julius Caesar <3, TKAM.

Worst: Lord of the Flies, The Gatekeepers (yes, that book about the college admissions officer from Wesleyan. It made me so paranoid).

Best: The Great Gatsby, Julius Caesar, Foxfire (which I am seriously surprised was in our curriculum, given the content lol).

Best: Brave New World, The Catcher in the Rye, Huck Finn

Worst: The Grapes of Wrath, Silas Marner, The Scarlet Letter, Pride and Prejudice, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, the Hounds of the Baskervilles
