best/worst state school

At least in my home state, California, I would say...

Best: Cal/UCLA

Worst: I don't know if there's one school I can pin down as "worst," but I'm not really dying to go to...CSU Stanislaus, for one.

IMO, in considering the consensus choices (UC Berkeley, U Virginia, UCLA, U Michigan, U North Carolina, W&M, U Wisconsin, U Florida, U Texas, Texas A&M, Penn State), the best for undergrad is William & Mary, but this is like trying to pick who's the best looking among Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Hugh Jackman, etc. All are pretty...spectacular! You can choose first and I'll take whoever is left! :)

Best State School: UNC-Chapel Hill/UVA
Worst: community colleges? out of the top public schools, I'll say New Mexico or New Orleans

I agree with Post #18 that limiting the choices to state flagship universities makes more sense. The best are: Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, Virginia, Wisconsin & UNC
The worst of the state flagship universities: Arizona State & West Virginia.

By that logic, drop UCLA.

Best Georgia tech, UVA, Berk worst wud be like daemen college in new York

In Texas:

Best: University of Texas

Worst: Texas A&M :)

The "best" state university will vary by person and what they're looking for. Michigan State has a well known agricultural program (as well as agricultural engineering, etc.; this doesn't mean you graduate to become a farmer) and a hotel/restaurant program quite comparable to Cornell's. (just a different emphasis) Unfortunately, there are plenty of good universities that don't make it into the top whatever, and tend to be ignored. A well-known state school like Berkeley or UVA isn't necessarily better, depending on what you want to study and what type of environment you're looking for.

I've seen some of the local universities, and they're quite terrifying in what they offer, but they're not "at the bottom." Public universities/colleges can become pretty bad if you start looking.

Coming from Michigan, U of M is a bit overrated. While certainly a good university, it's definitely not for everyone, and prospective applicants REALLY need to see what the place is like instead of relying on hearsay and mail. (the reputation seems to be slightly exaggerated in some cases, which is why a visit would be well worth it if U of M is one of your top choices, but this mostly applies to out of state applicants.)

University of Wisconsin all the way

In New York's SUNY system, Binghamton hands down- I know kids who got waitlisted there, but accepted into their choice schools. ( Which where William and Mary, and some Ivy's). Worst is debatable. Some would say Albany, because its a huge party school, some could say others.

Michigan is not overrated jsd472. While it might not be for everyone, no school is. It certainly is a much better school overall than State.

Michigan certainly has a better reputation than MSU, but it's a bit unfair to say U of M is significantly better overall than State. They're just not in the limelight like U of M is, which is why I said U of M is overrated. (at least many of the people I've been around, who have almost elevated it to a cult symbol. Perhaps your community thinks differently, but I'm rather far away from Novi, so I have no clue.)

Best: California, Michigan, Virginia

Worst: New Mexico, Wyoming, Idaho

U of M is significantly better than Michigan State. There I said it, and it's totally fair. I do agree with one comment you did make. Something about you having no clue........

Of course Michigan's programs are overall better, but a land grant college that's purpose is to meet the needs of the state is not meant to be a "prestige" school the way UMich is. Neither college is over or under rated, both are great for what they are.

I'd say the best state school is probably Cal. As for the "worst" state flagship, I'd probably say WVU - it seems like everybody who goes there plans on transferring at some point, and the folks applying to George Mason and VCU use West Virginia as a safety.

I'm a firm believer in the notion that a student can get as good an education at any decent college as they can at a "top" school, but coming from a highly regarded program obviously has its advantages.

Penn is a private school.
To the person above- so is U of Chicago.

For the record, Daemen College in Amherst NY is a private school, not public.

Best: UC-Berkeley, University of Virginia, University of Michigan
Worst: Many

i’d go georgia southern for worst

UChicago might be misread by some to be UC Hicago :D
