I really want to go to this school but I am unsure of my grades for getting in. Which would increase overrall chances of getting in, because I need to get in?

Is it better to apply for fall then summer as my 2nd choice, just to just apply straight to the summer program?

I would love to go to the summer program.

Right now I have a 3.4 unweighted with 10 ap's and a 25 act

You have a better shot if you apply to the summer program. You definitely should call the admissions office. That's what I did when I was trying to figure out my chances. They were really helpful.

When they ask for gpa, do you give the 3.4 unweighted or the much higher weighted gpa? Ten AP's should make a big difference. Or do they ask for both?

there were a ton of students from our OOS high school who had a similar GPA to you....They were admitted for last year, ONLY if they did do the summer program...If you somehow let them know that you definitely want to do the summer, IMO you have a very good chance of getting in....

My GPA is somewhat low because I have taken 10 AP's. My ACT is a 25 because I straight-up suck at taking tests. My question is, which would offer me better chances to get in overall?

Option 1:
First Choice: Fall Semester /2nd Choice: Summer Program

Option 2:
First Choice: Summer Program / No second choice

As of RIGHT NOW I have picked Option 1, I put that on my application stating that my first choice is fall and 2nd is summer, but I which to know if I should change that or keep that to give me the best chances possible.

EDIT: My schools method of weighting grades is really unfair, if you take any AP/Honors/ Advanced classes, even one, you automatically receive a weighted GPA of .3 higher than your unweighted, no matter what. So my weighted is a 3.7, which really isn't that great because of what I just mentioned, but 10 AP's should matter. Also, I just sent in my recommendation in and it is amazing.

Can you ask them if Option 2 would improve your chances of admission? I would think that by putting Option 1, you might not get in Fall but would have an equal chance at Summer as if you put Option 2. Do they admit all of the people to Summer Term who put it as #1 and then move on to those who put it #2? Or, do they put all of the people willing to come in the summer together? If you put Option 2, however, they probably won't even consider you for Fall Term.

I tried extremely hard in high school I'm just a miserable test-taker. I've done all my work for every class and study my brains off but I cant help being a bad tester. I don't regret anything though so well see.

First off, I doubt half the kids at Penn State have taken 10 AP's. And secondly, I working hard is completely different than being a good tester. I always did my work yet it is somewhat difficult to achieve a perfect grade if tests count 80% and work/ participation is 20%.

dont worry too much, every kid at my school last year got in, and the lowest GPA wa an 81.0 what that is on a 4.0 scale I don;t know, but surely lower than 3.4.
Lowest SAT combo was 530/390/490.

Samiamy, you either live in state college or most of those people were only accepted to branch campuses. Those scores are too low for main campus.

My counselor told me that I have a good chance because of my workload, so well see. I mean my scores are only a little bit under par, and they take 25% kids with lower scores so hopefully I'll get in. Besides, I'm still waiting for my ACT scores back so maybe I did better.

first of all it sounds like you do work hard. gpa's are sometimes deceiving. the fact that you took so many ap's should help to explain your gpa. but you should not be ashemed of your gpa. it is fine and i think good enough to get into penn state, especially if you apply for the summer session.

If i were you, i would change the application and make summer session your first choice. I think this demonstrates to the admissions department how anxious you are to go to psu.

most kids, who do not have psu as their first choice most likely do not apply for summer session. the university knows that kids who are applying for summer session, in all probability, really want to go to psu. this is a positive in my opinion. most universities want highly qualified students, but they also want students who really want to go to their university. you certainly fall into this catagory and applying for the summer term is one way of expressing that.

you may also want to send in your first marking period grades this year (if they are good). most universities will not factor that into the gpa until half way through the school year (typically two marking periods), however it wouldn't hurt to let them know how hard you are working.

That post was extremely uplifting, thank you very much for the positive comments, and I think I am going to change it to Summer, not only because I want to go so badly, but because my friends that attend now, said they regret not doing Summer.
