So I got into Indiana university, university of Missouri, and Illinois. I'm from arizona so I'm oos for all. I narrowed it down to mizzou and iu. So I want to go into some form of marking PR advertising side of business. I could either get a major in PR from mizzou's j-school (top in the country) and minor in marketing. Or at IU I could get a major in journalism (IU is a very good j-school but not as good as mizzou) and get a minor from one of the best business schools in the country in multiple areas (marketing, business Econ). So which would be more marketable. Keep in mind I could use the IU business career services which is top in the country

Pick the school you like the best. You may change majors.

Look more closely too, so you can know your real options.

Have you confirmed with them that you can use the career services of IU with just a minor? The reason I say that is because that would not be possible at two of the schools I’ve worked at.

It doesn’t look like those majoring in Journalism can minor in business at IU: [Minors and Certificate : Academic Bulletin](<a href=“Indiana University Bloomington”>Indiana University Bloomington)

And they do not offer a minor in Econ:

[Minors and Certificates: Academics: Undergraduate Program: Kelley School of Business: Indiana University Bloomington](<a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley)

There really is no way to know which of these degrees would be more “marketable.” The likelihood is that if you apply yourself and take advantage of opportunities on either of these campuses, you’ll be equally well prepared to enter the job market whether you go to the University of Missouri or Indiana University. There is no meaningful difference in quality between these two fine institutions. Have you visited either or both of them? Is money a consideration? I know Mizzou is considerably more affordable for OOS students than IU is.

Well I could minor in business and marketing because journalism is in the college of arts and sciences. And how much would a minor with prestige matter

You need to check out the school bulletins to see what rules there are about majoring/minoring in different schools, etc. Could you do a spreadsheet of some sort comparing what classes you would need to do what programs at each school? This kind of exercise might help you figure things out more concretely.

You may encounter problems getting the classes you need/want in a program that is not in your school within the university…for example, business majors generally have priority in registering for courses in the business school. This could make it difficult for you.

You need to check out what the school says is “possible” to do and find out how easy/hard it is to accomplish.

The good thing is that you have no bad choices!

I agree with absweetmarie. Don’t overthink this. And focus on the big things that matter: things like cost differences, the campus at which you feel most at home, and the major you are most excited about.

On a more practical note, I can tell you that as a b-school prof, the salaries and available positions are going to be more plentiful coming with a vanilla business degree, than a degree in PR/advertising.
