better to do a program or research?

I understand that many of the programs themselves consist of hardcore research but I was wondering if it would be better to do research with a prof./doctor/etc at a lab or university. Ive seen that many people who choose this option also work with the mentor or whoever to write a paper that may possibly be published in a journal.

it might be hard to compare the two things but i want anyones input since i am a junior and am looking for a very productive way to spend my summer before senior year, one that will also look good on a college app.

depends on what u want to go into, if u wanna go into research then do the research. but some of the programs also do research (RSI) or are VERY selective and you should definitely then go if you get in

Depends on what program you're thinking about. If it's RSI, TASP, or something like that, then those would be the better way to go. Other less selective programs (especially ones that require you to pay big bucks) aren't worth it and you should do the lab research.

well, i plan on applying to dual degree med programs...boston u, rice, northwestern, brown, etc.

i doubt i can get into RSI...im being realistic. I guess the research is better. :/

Bump

Research ... and aim for it to be published.

I got a reply from a professor saying that since most professors are busy teaching undergrads and grads over the summer, they dont have room for hs students over the summer, usually.

I have to keep looking but this will definitely prove to be a difficult position to find.

What else can I do? I've e-mailed some other professors/heads but no replies yet. I also want to apply to Harvard SSP...but is it worth it compared to research?
