BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

Reading all this stuff gives me a massive amount amount of anxiety! I went through this process last year with my son. He applied to 21 programs, MT & Acting, and only got in 4 with a WL and a Sophomore year admission. I was SO sad when he got rejected by his top schools but breathe deep and have faith because the one school we knew nothing about - BU, was the one he chose and he is doing AMAZING there now (Dean’s List already!) and absolutely LOVES the school, program, teachers, kids, and city. We are over the moon with how well the fit is for him. Yet before this I was crying weekly due to rejections and it was such a hard time. Just have faith and hope that your child will find a fit somewhere. Break a leg everyone and if you need info on BU, I am more than happy to give it.

@HopeinMT Thank you so much for sharing your story! BU is a top program and I hear wonderful things about it!

@HopeinMT BU moved to the top of my D’s list after our day there and her audition. We fell in love with McCaela!

Also have a Dean’s List D at BU. Ask away! And EVERYONE falls in love with McCaela!

Has anyone gotten a call from UNCSA yet?

@MomMimi My D also has been waitlisted for UMich Acting. We heard that they gave details of how the “unranked waitlist” works at the info session in Ann Arbor but we were not able to be there to hear it. If anyone else has feedback on that would love any insights. I expect few get off of the list as it is so competitive–also it really depends on the year, and the types of kids they need to round out their ensemble of 20.

@hamdog123 my S said there is another round of on campus auditions this weekend. So we are guessing next Tuesday might be the start of phone calls from UNCSA.

@collegeadmiss Where is he getting his info? Their website makes it appear that this past weekend was the last weekend of auditions.

@collegeadmiss Their last round of auditions finished on Sunday.

My S said he spoke with someone who currently attends UNCSA and they told him there are auditions this weekend. Oh well, they must be mistaken.

Re: UNCSA, my understanding both from the website and what I heard from campus is that the last round of auditions with this Past weekend Feb. 16 and 17, so the calls should be going out this week. If anyone wants more information about UNCSA I will happily share information. My D is a very happy 1st year drama student there.

@posivibes We were at the info session on campus. They did not give any info regarding a waitlist other than not very many people would be on it. They said they generally put 5 or less on the waitlist. They aim to accept about 28 for acting (out of 380 that they would be auditioning this year)

Has anyone received a call from UNCSA yet?

During the info session we attended they said there were 500 applicants, 380 auditions, acceptances offered to 28 with hopes of filling a class of 20. The waiting list is dependent on who doesn’t accept the offer of admission. So if the tenor doesn’t accept they probably aren’t going to offer it that spot to the first soprano on the waiting list. He also said if you were waitlisted to call and come to campus if you can to make your case. They want to know that you will definitely say yes if they offer a spot from the list. He also said he would provide feedback to any applicant waitlisted or denied about their audition and that every year he gets a few calls. We were there in mid-January.

Thank you @Boilermom and @TravelMom402! This are all very helpful stats. May I ask @TravelMom402 who the man is who gave this information out? You mentioned a “he”? Was it the head of the program or an admissions officer? If so, do you recall their name please?

@TravelMom402 is that Michigan or UNCSA?

@FourStars - as always - your kindness & advice warms my heart!

@hamdog123 I think (hope) @TravelMom402 is answering my question about Michigan.

Thank you @boilermom and @TravelMom402 ! What a wonderful and supportive community - so nice to be a part of it. This is the experience my S has always had with his theater friends, and it’s great to see that it carries over to the parent community too!

Has anyone received or heard of someone receiving a call from UNCSA?
