BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

@gidamom about Elon. @katew529 has a freshman D at Elon acting. Maybe she can chime in.

@TheatreMomKatie We were wondering if there was a waitlist for Theater but she just didn’t make it on it, or if there isn’t one at all. When we emailed the department (which the letter indicated to do if we have any questions about Theater minor etc), they replied …“If you aren’t accepted off of the waitlist for this year, you would have to audition again, and be approved in order to be a part of the theatre program. You can audition again for a final time in mid-October or December 2019 for spring entry.” That made if sound like if she DID come off the waitlist she wouldn’t have to re audition because she would be in the program. UGH!! Clear as mud… My D was trying not to want Fordham but it was hard not too. We both felt like it was a great fit for her. Moving on with other acceptances but we both needed closure on this one.

Thank you so much @Atreuh ! I would really appreciate if you could share your thoughts and opinion about the program @katew529 !!

@gidamom Greetings! My son is a freshman Elon BFA Acting/BA Arts Admin double major. I know @katew529
My son loves the program. There are 15 in his class and they are a very tight knit group. They share a lot of their classes with the BFA MT majors. He also is able to take weekly private vocal lessons for credit. The majority of their classes are performing arts. Fall semester he had one Gen Ed and the rest acting, movement, voice, etc. Freshman can audition for all of the musicals/plays, etc. My son has been an understudy three times and will be in an upperclassman’s play for their directing class. They have a winter term and the BFAs can audition to be in a winterstock production for 4 credit hours. This spring, all of his classes are performing arts. A big selling point for him was that, as a BFA Acting major, he could add an Arts Administration major with a business minor and have several of his BFA Acting classes counted towards the requirements so he will still finish in 4 years. This way, he learns the business side of performing - finance, management, marketing, etc. and gets the skills for a survival job in arts admin while he is auditioning. They bring in several guests to teach masterclasses. This year, they have brought in a LAMDA director, large repertory theatre directors, film/TV actors, etc. and they have taught them Shakespeare, auditioning, movement, etc. Also, they get to spend a semester of their junior year in London! Sorry for the long post! Let me know if you have any other questions. We are big fans of the program

@gidamom - look for a p.m.

@Griffilus - Elon sounds like a great program! And it’s not in the snowbelt!

Thank you so much @Griffilus ! Don’t apologize for the long post! I actually appreciate all the info! The program sounds great from what you are describing! And how awesome that your son is doing the double major as well. It makes my heart so happy to hear when they find a place they truly feel comfortable and happy in! Would you mind if I send you a PM?

@Atreuh True!! I am originally from the Midwest and we moved south years ago to get away from the ice and snow! Elon is north of us but at least not bad winters

@gidamom You’re welcome! Please feel free to send me a PM.

@morgan830 My daughter received an acceptance from Webster through email on Monday.

@gish814 thank you. I’m guessing that’s not a good sign for my d. Oh well. She’s got some good options but I really love Webster!!

HERE IS A THREAD FOR POSTING ACCEPTANCES BY SCHOOL

My D’s UNCSA portal was finally updated today with a rejection that also suggested she reapply next next year and that her audition/interview showed promise. Assuming this is the standard rejection form, but I’m curious if others rejections also suggested they reapply the following year?

FYI for anyone wondering about The New School, I spoke with someone in admissions and asked about the congratulatory message in the portal without receiving an acceptance email and they told me it’s not an official acceptance until you get their email. Emails will be sent through April 1. Best of luck to everyone still waiting!

@Abutilon No, not all UNCSA rejection letters suggest the student reapply next year!!

@drama315 Thank you for the reply! It’s such a strange rejection. My D really loves their program. I’m wondering if she should email admissions and let them know just that?

@Abutilon My son’s UNCSA rejection did not mention reapplying. I think your D should definitely reach out to them! You never know! Good luck!

@acting2023 and @NYC3Mom and any others with questions about UNCSA, please feel free to reach out here or on PM if you need any information at all. I would be happy to share our experience, my D is a very happy first year drama student.

I’ll also vouch for the helpfulness of @FourStars for other schools within UNCSA (such as Design & Production) – provided such great advice to us!

@Abutilon my daughter received the same. She actually reached out to them immediately, and has yet to hear a reply or any response at all. Honestly, that was really disappointing to me
