@2024parentbfa - Information on yield (attending / accepted) for Tisch Drama has never been available so really hard to know. I think I read Dean Green saying something to freshman about the competitiveness of acceptance but I can’t find it.
This is an old discussion that addresses the number of Drama majors total (attending) but how many are accepted is kind of ???
The last couple of years there has been a waitlist and very little movement on it so yield for Tisch seems to be predictable - whatever it is! I am guessing they need to accept at least 450+ actors total since they have around 300 non-MT slots. It’s huge.
Question for you all…so my son has been given a deadline of Mar 7 to let a BFA acting program know yes or no. If he doesn’t tell them by then, he will be moved to their WL. We are still waiting for some decisions, financial packages, as well as he has one more audition next week. This particular yes came early…in Nov…but we obviously can’t commit until we have everything in front of us. Anyone have this experience before?
@mommyMT Prior to the past year or so, colleges could not ask you to commit prior to the May 1st deadline based on the NACAC Code of Ethics and Professional Practices. Unfortunately, there is now a moratorium on the CEEP and no violations of such will be followed up on. So, colleges this year and last have been requesting commitments prior to May 1st, and they can do so due to the moratorium. Not saying it is ethical, but it is happening. You will have to make a personal decision on whether to say yes or no, even without all the info.
@2024parentbfa - you know, I personally think the size of the program at Tisch makes it one of the more reliable “admits” - if your kid has real talent, is personable and passionate and has a great academic record they have a reasonable chance of getting into NYU. Obviously it’s not “easy” to get into but with these programs that accept 12 or 16 kids it’s just impossible to predict if there’s any chance at all. I will cross my fingers for you!
I recall from the NYU info session they have 9 studios with approx 50 students per studio (individually each would be considered a large BFA class). However they assured us that each studio was broken down into smaller groups so you’re still going though the program with a small cohort. No idea how many apply. Must be in the thousands.
@stagedoormama is correct. This year I have heard of acceptances that want an early commitment, audition information that states if accepted you have 30 days to commit or be put on a waitlist, non-binding scholarships that you must sign or forfeit your offer - that if signed become binding as of a certain date (so you have to cancel that scholarship if you accept another offer), and schools that ask you to commit early but state that you can ask for an extension. It makes it hard when notifications come out later and you don’t have all the financial information. Not to mention visiting your accepted schools.
As a suggestion, ask if you can have an extension on that date.
@rickle1 If we are talking drama only, there are 6 studios (this includes MT). D is in Strasberg. She has 17 in her group and there are 3 groups. I have no idea how many they accept to get the desired number but I think @CaMom13 might have the math on possible offer numbers. Best of luck!
Hi. What schools gave your d Acting redirects? We can help you with understanding the programs or can help you find someone who has a kid there that will answer your questions.
@rickle1 NYU does divide each studio class into smaller groups so that the students still get the small teacher:student ratio in their acting class as they would in a small BFA program (but still have the opportunity to be in larger classes and meet more people in their other classes). My daughter was in Playwrights Horizons for her primary studio and her group was 15 students. There were 4 groups for a total of 60 kids in the entire studio.
Regarding NYU…even though the cohort is large, the applicant pool is also large. I think we were lulled into thinking it was a reachable admit because my child had great academics and good feedback about acting ability (and a great audition they thought). Sadly, ED2 yielded a rejection. Generally NYU had 85,000 applicants this year for all the schools. I hope that others have the success that we did not.
Aww @CBSQandA - sorry about the NYU result and I hope your actor finds a perfect fit! I certainly didn’t mean to say the school is a slam dunk for anyone because it’s not. Tisch gets thousands of applicants and in addition to the academics the school is very big on diversity of all kinds - especially geographic - so I think it’s harder for a NJ kid than a ND kid. So many criteria factor into final decisions and there definitely are many more qualified candidates than they have slots for.
This may be old news to some, but I know someone who just found out they got accepted to Fordham for the BA in Theatre. Thought I’d send a heads up that at least some decisions are out!
Okay, I’m breaking my no-posting promise to my D because I have to vent. This Fordham news is k.i.l.l.i.n.g me! I’m trying to be a good theatre mom, but D has fantastic grades, passed multiple AP tests with 5’s, and has a decent SAT score. I just really wanted a strong academic school, and she already turned down the other academic acceptances because of no BFA admittance because she wasn’t interested in BA only now that she a BFA option. Fordham was pretty much my last hope because it was the only BA program she would consider. I realize this is my thing and not hers, but I’m really, really sad.
