BFA Acting Class of 2025: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

@anothertmtkid12

Could you email someone in the theater or admissions department and ask? That way if there is some flexibility, you can submit the one you feel best about. If you can’t get a definitive answer, I guess I’d go with the one that stays within their posted requirements.

@anothermtkid12
I agree with the above, it’s best to ask. Some schools are slightly flexible. Also, make sure you consider the slate. I don’t know whether you’re counting it in the 96 seconds, but know that the time limit for Syracuse is including your slate.

Does anyone know how long it takes to hear back from Chapman University (BFA Screen Acting) after we’ve sent prescreens?

@bostongirl249 Last year my daughter submitted her prescreen for BFA Screen Acting to Chapman on October 30 and received a pass from them on November 4th. Very quick. However, if you read the class of 2023s thread, Chapman was very slow and unreliable, often taking months and some never even hearing at all. I know everything is different this year, but if it has been a long time for you it can’t hurt to follow up with them.

My D is still waiting to hear from them as well. Submitted it about a week ago. Report back if you hear any news on their process.

Any idea how long Syracuse is taking to review prescreens?

@PlayOn - We submitted Syracuse prescreen on Sept. 3 and heard back on October 15.

We just attended the UNCSA “preview” zoom. Fun fact - their applications are up 40% this year and their audition slots are almost full. They said they typically get 800 - 900 applications each year to fill 20 acting spots and 2 directing spots.

Wow!! I know people were guessing that numbers would be up this year, but that really confirms it. Yikes!!!

@SuddenlySeeMore I was there too! I wasn’t expecting that much so it was a little shocking, but a good reality check.

How long does it typically take to hear back from UMichigan? My daughter applied 10/22. I know musical theatre responses were trickling out but we have not heard anything about acting. Thanks!

My DD heard back from both Chapman and Syracuse Prescreens already. Nothing from Michigan.

Curious if anyone has heard from Baylor. My D heard that she was accepted academically but nothing from the theatre department to schedule an interview/audition.

No we have not. We’ve heard from Pace, Webster, Otterbein, and U Miami so far for acting prescreens. Anxiously awaiting UMichigan, Baylor and Fordham among others. (My daughter is applying to both MT and acting programs.)

My daughter applied for BFA Screen Acting at Chapman on Oct 31 and heard back within ten days that she got an audition.

Anyone auditioning for the BFA in Acting at UCONN?

Hi @DramaDad4Life! Yes, my son is applying to UCONN’s Acting BFA. His audition is in February. He was a little concerned because he found out he has to sing…he’s trying to figure out what to do for that. So far, that’s the only BFA acting program that’s requiring a song.

That’s awesome! UCONN does not have a Musical Theater Program so their BFA in Acting includes Theater Acting, Acting For The Camera and some Musical Theater. My understanding is that you don’t have to be an amazing singer, but they want to see that you can deliver the lyrics in character. We like their program because they offer a more well rounded education. A lot of schools offer 3 different degrees for those areas and acting is sometimes filled with MT students that didn’t get in the MT Program. My son is auditioning before February so I’ll post about what he thinks of the process when he’s done. I heard that they encourage kids to audition early and have been known to make some acceptance calls early before the March 1 Decision Day comes

I submitted Chapman prescreens on 10/27 and still haven’t heard back. Is that bad? I emailed Chapman admissions and their theatre department and they never got back to me :confused:

Hmm, I heard people that had been waiting finally heard last week. Maybe there’s still a batch of prescreens they’re holding onto? They had two weekends of auditions for EA/ED applicants, so maybe you’ll hear this week now that those are complete. I’d say if you don’t hear back, try emailing again.
