BFA Acting only schools

Looking to add to our list of BFA Acting schools that do not have an MT program at the school. It is ok, actually a good thing to us, if they produce musicals, include in curriculum, etc.
Schools we are aware of are…
SUNY Purchase
UNCSA
Rutgers(but I think I remember reading MT starting in Fall 2018?)
DePaul
Julliard
Univ Minnesota

Are there more?

Thanks!

Boston University. They don’t have a BFA in Music Theatre but they do offer an MT concentration.

I’ll chime in with some Southern California BFA options:
Chapman
USC (but MT is coming soon)
Cal Arts

Adding to the So Cal list - UCSB has a BFA in Acting as well. No MT.

IL Wesleyan has acting BFA but no MT… It’s #28 in performing arts schools for 2018. I couldn’t believe it but They do have some alumni from there (older but still)

BFA Acting (no MT):
University of Illinois (main campus) Urbana-Champaign.
Northwestern - but they have a MT concentration.

We saw a play at U of Minnesota/ Guthrie last spring. Sr. class BFA. There was great musical talent put to use.

Northwestern is a great program, but it’s a BA. Are you interested in BA too bc that would open up a lot more options.

@actingdreams Illinois Wesleyan does in fact have both a BFA in Acting as well as a BFA in Musical Theatre

hi @type1mom thanks for correcting me. I did not see MT on their program list but of course I was quickly looking for drama/acting and I did just notice this.

University of Evansville has acting only but does one musical a year.

Love Santa Barbara!!

Rutgers is BFA Acting only still. (MT may be added but is still a year or more in the future.)

UMBC in Baltimore, MD has Acting BFA and no MT (student-run Musical Theatre Club produces musical showcase and a musical each year though).

My son is in BFA acting program at BU. He applied to BFA acting programs at BU, NYU, Fordham, USC, CMU, Juilliard, Syracuse,UMich, Rutgers, UNCSA, USC, and UNH. All had MT as well, except BU, UNCSA, Rutgers and Juilliard.

I agree that adding to your list would be a good idea, it’s a highly competitive process!

One thing to mention: I don’t know if you are a student or parent or boy or girl, but while MT auditions tend to be at least 2:1 girls to boys, acting auditions are much more 50/50 and often seemed to have more boys than girls. Not sure why, maybe the dance scares th off MT…just FYI

May I ask why you only want schools that don’t have an MT program? I’m curious. Thank you!

CalArts Acting BFA does not have an MT program, but many of the kids are talented singers. There is also a music school, so there is alot of opportunities to sing and perform

SMU (Southern Methodist) meadows school of the arts has BFA acting only. They give good scholarships too!

Our experience with BFA acting was there will still WAY more girls than boys auditioning. But that may just be our perspective.

Thanks for the info everyone! @jbtcat - just a way to categorize the schools. So many factors go into creating the “feel” of a program.

Hi, I believe both University of Illinois BFAs (Chicago and Urbana-Champaign) fit that bill. Maybe University of Connecticut also?

UT Austin. They had MT, but are phasing it out (this is the last year with any MT students, I believe). They won’t keep doing musicals after those students are gone, but maybe they’ll do plays with some musical elements (I don’t know for sure). They do have a good music school where one can take voice lessons.
