@actor16 - In the past everyone we know who auditioned at Guthrie has been asked to sing. Same so far this year. BAL
Yes at Guthrie most people sing as part of standard audition. My D definitely did as did two others I know.
@Atreuh and @actor16 My D has UMinn today. Joe Price and Marcela Lorca were there. @Atreuh you asked on the other thread. While we were there everyone was asked to sing. One young girl came out after singing happy birthday. :"> Based on my D audition: You go in and need to do your Shakespeare and then stretch - no adjustments. They decide if they want your contemporary. Then song. A short interview follows. My D said it was nice but there werenât any poker faces in the room. She said Joe was very nice and the lady terrified her. Lol. Break legs!
For my audition for Minnesota, I did all three pieces (Contempriary, Shakespeare, then stretch). I then sang. There was a short interview. Of all my auditions, I found them the most stone-faced and hard to read. Almost a bit cold. I did not think it was an incredible audition. I got a callback a few days later. Big reminder that it is absolutely impossible to read into anything!
@ginaf1102 lol - I had forgotten her name, but it was Marcela who was also in my Dâs Guthrie audition and she had the same reaction as your D did. Funny.
@actingdreams it sounds like it is going well. My D did NYU on campus and there were several rooms going at the same time. Her interview was what she calls âhardâ, as in thought provoking questions. They did ask what kind of studio she prefers, so that was positive, maybe? Who knows? How did your S feel about UNCSA audition? My D felt good in that one, too, but we wonder if they sorta make everyone feel good.
I also agree with @SopranoMom . Once youâve auditioned and are accepted into a program, the school should be committed to training you - the âdefaultâ should be that youâre staying in the program all four years, as long as you work hard, come to class on time, etc. Yearly juries to evaluate how youâre progressing and what you need to work on are valuable, but even then the presumption should be that youâre staying in the program unless something is DRASTICALLY wrong (and even then, you should have ample warning and time to work on the problem with the help and guidance of the instructors, and only be removed from the program in rare, drastic cases). Once the school has accepted you as a freshman and youâve committed to them, they should be committed to YOU and your training.
I donât know Millikin at all, but that website description sounds like there is NO presumption that youâre staying in the program - you have to âre-auditionâ each year as though youâre auditioning for the very first time, and âearnâ your way into the following year. So even if youâre working hard and putting in 110% effort and coming to class on time, the school could potentially say âEh, this kid isnât as talented as we initially thought. Letâs get rid of him.â Which means, as @GloriaVaughn said, the schoolâs priority is âprotecting its reputationâ for only graduating amazing actors - its priority is NOT loyalty to the students it already accepted. It has NO sense of responsibility or commitment to those students. To me, it would be analogous to a regular school kicking out all students who get âBâ or âCâ grades on standardized tests, and then boasting âAll our graduates are straight A students!â as though it means the schoolâs education is so great, when in reality they simply got rid of anyone who WASNâT at that standard.
That may enhance the schoolâs reputation with casting directorsâŠbut as a parent, I would NOT be comfortable sending my child to a school where thereâs no presumption that they will be allowed to stay in the program. Once theyâre accepted, I expect them to stay in the program as long as they work hard, complete all assignments, and come to class on time.
^^ from what i hear casting directors rarely care where you went to school.
@FourStars NYU went fine. My son just said the convo with the auditor was what was his ultimate goal after his BFA (possibly to decipher a studio that works best?) all is well. Weâre back and today Iâm assuming is staer of the true unifieds session. Its really busy and a lot more colleges are running auditions today.
Son felt very good about uncsa and nyu but I guess we will know about UNCSA soon. After reading on cc, it appears that they will send you a letter to let you know if they are still interested in you (or not ⊠Brutal)
:-S
April 1st is the decision for NYU so we will have to wait. Of course my sons dream school is Juilliard so heâs really hoping for a callback on Friday and an acceptance the week after the NYC weekend. I hear you know the following week if you have gotten in (we can only hope right now ) :-h
In reference to the post about Casting Directors caring about where you went to school- they donât. I work in casting and in my experience, where someone went to school is really not important.
Casting Directors donât care where you went to school although my ex received his BFA from KU and he went to California soon after, did a little improve work and now a broker. The connections matter and he has mentioned having them before you leave school is even more important
@actingdreams I agree. Connections can help for sure after graduation. And we are finding they help even while in school (looking for summer internships or even a place to stay while doing oneâŠconnections help!).
On another note - UNCSA will call about interest and/or admissions. This happened twice for the kids we know (once to express interest and not an official offerâŠthey were clear about thatâŠin mid Feb and another âofficialâ call in late Feb/early March. The actual admission letter came way later as did the final financial info (some talent scholarship came in email before the formal package was sent - but be warned they are tiny in comparison to other schools ----but the total cost is a lot less too - it all worked out about even with other schools in our experience).
Quin Gordon who is the director of drama recruitment and a drama professor makes the calls. He was most likely the other auditor in the room with your son (he is the recruiter and sees all auditions). I know the Dean has not been in all the auditions but Quin is always there.
Hope that info helps.
(note: UNCSA does send letters if no longer interested and those did go out mid Feb as well in the past. Some letters ask you to audition againâŠthose do NOT go out to everyone and means they actually would like you to consider auditioning again if you go that route in a year. Not sure what they do if you are in a holding patternâŠyou may not hear until they make calls about actual offers and then probably a waitlist I am guessing - but really do not know that info). And of course, programs change how they do things and with the new Dean it may be different this year.
I am crossing my fingers for a Juilliard call back for your son, as well as good news from UNCSA, NYU and others!
Thanks for the info @bfahopeful I believe Quinn was also an auditor yesterday ? He said he was director of recruitment and an alumni? Very nice guy. Very passionate about the program. Hope to hear from them soon
Yes @actingdreams that is Quin. He is a wonderful person. Really, really like him as do the students. He is also an amazing director there.
Thanks so much for all the information about UNCSA, @bfahopeful! Itâs a âdream schoolâ for my D, so hearing about how and when they notify is super helpful!
Hi All! We had our Mason Gross Auditions this morning. It went very well. Her auditiors were Barbra I believe and gentleman. Canât recall his name. He did both monologues. There were no adjustments but the male wanted to quickly get to my Sons resume and training at his school. Asked a lot about his experience and his summer camps (that berridge thing came up again) barbra said she loved his voice (never heard of this lol) and the typical questions of Why Mason gross. My son is always sure to know the program thoroughly before the auditions. After that, they thanked him and that was it.
We head over to the next hotel holding auditions for Pace, Scad and possibly rescheduling The New School for today instead of thursday. This is when things begin to get a bit bizarre.
My son hands Pace his resume and headshot then asked how long was the audition was (because the email stated until 4 pm ⊠well my son waited 2 minutes and looked around and went back to say that heâd like to withdraw his audition spot because he has another at 5:20 Pm and Pace said callbacks are at 5pm
Do you know the guy refused to give him his resume and headshot back after he had asked twice and said that he was certain that he would like to withdraw the audition due to his schedule and the Drama admission guy kept reading over everyrhing and then told him that he didnt have to audition, could he just be back at 5pm for the callback? Has anyone experienced this???
My son did not want to continue the conversation so he said Ok and just walked off.
Got in line to see if he could Audition for the New School Today instead of Thursday so that he didnt have to miss anymore school (and they had a walk-ins sign) and before he could open his mouth, the admission guy said âyou must be â â
The shell-shock my son had on his face was something. He asked me if this day could get anymore bizarre. He rescheduled for an earlier morning so that he could return to school on Thursday and thats it . Like how did this guy know his name (and did not look at any computers etc ) ?
Wow @actingdreams that is super weird with Pace. Guessing maybe Wayne (if it was him) saw your sonâs resume and figured he would like to audition him and would take a partial audition over none at all. Given what you describe as his background I am sure Pace recognizes the HS schoolâs name and knows other kids from the same HS program. Also may have info from the prescreen â I often wonder if they already have an idea of who they may be really interested in from that.
As for New School, they require a prescreen and Iâm guessing your son must have WOWED them during that and they recognized him. That is awesome.
Better than not being recognized at allâŠwhich also happens and is not a boost to the confidence level.
@actingdreams I totally agree with @bfahopeful. Although bizarre, bizarre in a good way! He is definitely making an impression!
@actingdreams I have found the people at The New School are so amazing. Sam Byron is the man sitting at the desk. Heâs so nice! Iâve emailed him a bunch and heâs always so accommodating.
I also love how your S is making big decisions and not looking back. Good for him.
Looking for insights on the Carnegie BFA acting audition. Their website and invite didnât provide any detail, other than the date, time (3 hrs), and location. Ours is a regional audition in LA. The prescreen was two contemporary pieces plus a headshot and resume. I assume the two pieces again at the live audition â is there an interview or motion workshop as well?
