There is a great thread over at MT that relates peoples' experiences in their auditions. I think that's a wonderful, generous idea, so I'm bringing it over here to straight theatre as well.

My son is auditioning only in straight theatre, so the very informative MT posts often don't apply to what will probably be his experiences. He's completed most of his applications just this past week--Step 1, almost done! He's still waiting for dates--

So if anyone does have anything to share, please post!

My D is finally all scheduled and has had one on site audition so far. The rest will be at LA Unifieds. Her first audition was for Chapman’s BFA in Theater Performance. There is not much to report. All went smoothly and as expected. The auditors were friendly (there were two). All of her info (headshots, resume etc) had already been uploaded so she didn’t have to bring them to the audition. Now it’s the waiting for a decision, which I think is harder on me than her.

I think the whole process is harder on us than them!!! Yes, it’s all about US US US!!! LOL! My daughter seems so hakuna matata about it all. I may get there one day…maybe.

GSOMTMom - You hit the nail on the head!! I guess this shows our kids do well under pressure, a trait that will serve them well in this profession.

My D was less “hakuna matata” and more “Que sera, sera”. She trusted that she would end up in the right place for her, kept an open mind and didn’t take the rejections personally. I followed her lead outwardly (even though inside I was a mess). She ended up with good choices and LOVES where she is!

I have my first audition for straight acting on December 7th at Viterbo. I’m feeling prepared but of course very nervous. All 5 of my auditions are confirmed, with 2 being at the Chicago unifieds and the rest on campus.

Reporting from U Arts today where my D auditioned along with 5 other acting students and 12 MT students. We checked in at 8:45 and were a little surprised to find students were expected to fill out a 3 page questionnaire. There were about 15 short answer questions. It took my D about 20 mins to fill out. Glad we weren’t late. I don’t know why they don’t send this to do beforehand! It seems too that they only reference this questionnaire if the student advances to the callback.
At 9:15 they took the students off in 3 groups, acting and MT, dance, and then vocal performance/music. They went to different buildings. The parents got a presentation by the financial aid office, the admissions office and then a Q and A with three current U Arts students. It was a good presentation and there were plenty of chances to ask questions. There was also a chance to check and see what information was missing from your child’s file.

My D finally texted me around 12 and said she had gone for the first round and felt like it had gone well. She did 2 monologues, even though admissions said they would only be asked to do 1. In the room were David Howey who is the theatre dept chair, an accompanist and a vocal teacher who she didn’t catch the name of. MT applicants were being seen in the same room. She said they weren’t given numbers and names were just randomly called. U Arts has a second callback round so after your turn you wait for everyone to be done and then they post a callback list.
They called back one male and one female actor and 7 MT students. My D did get a callback. For the callback she auditioned for just David Howey. He asked her to do one of her earlier monologues again, and then gave her an adjustment. Then he asked for a new mono, which she did. The he gave her an adjustment for that one. Overall she did 5 monos, although 2 were repeats. He gave her some nice feedback, and asked her a few questions from her resume and questionnaire and they had a nice chat. She said he has great energy and has an amazing accent! She really liked him.

Admissions said you would get a letter in the mail within 3 weeks with an admissions decision, and a decision on scholarship. The scholarships range from $8,000 to $20,000 and are based on a combination of three factors; your audition score, your GPA and your test scores. So high scores are a big help.

Overall a nice day and it will be great to hear something before Christmas!

University of the Arts is located in center city Philadelphia. It is right in the heart of the theatre district and U Arts students have access to some great professional theatres during their studies.

i thought it might be the Philly school. Mine is likely to go to Temple and likes the theatre options in Philadelphia too and thinks it would be a great city to attend college in :)

dramamom0804 - how fantastic for her to the the only female called back! Great day for her. My S has a friend who is a dance major, he really loves it at U Arts.

I just got back from my audition for BFA Acting at Viterbo University!
We started with a dance/movement call (MTers and Actors). I thought they would separate us, and only MTers would dance and actors would do other movement. But I was wrong. We were doing pirouettes, and I think to myself, “psh. Double turns. I did these all the time when I was on the dance team! Piece of cake.” And then I proceeded to fall onto my butt and crash into the barre. ha. ha. ha… ha. Thankfully my good memory helped redeem me for the jazz number we learned. We then did some singing warm ups with the MTers (which was optional, but there were only 6 of us, so we all joined in.)
They excused us to change our clothes, and the MTers got called to audition first, then the actors.
I did my two monologues, and they had me redo my comedic monologue as if I were British, and then as if I had to throw up. Which gave them some good laughs. Then they had me sit down to talk and asked some questions. (Why Viterbo? If you couldn’t do theatre, what would you do? etc…) AND THEN, the man told me “I like you. I like you alot. I liked you on Acceptd too.” And the two women told me, “You’re very talented, we’d love to have you! Don’t forget about us when you get offers from other places.”
That had me quite taken aback because I was under the impression that auditors kept a poker face at all times.
I’m very happy with it, but I know I can’t get my hopes up! Onto the next 4!
