BFA at an LAC

I really want to go to a small LAC for college. I love the small community feel, the academic focus, personal attention, ect. BUT I also want to get a lot of performance opportunities within my theater degree. So here's my question? Are there any good LACs that offer a BFA or BA that is really performance intensive?

To give you an idea of what I'm interested in, so far I like Skidmore, Kenyon, Muhlenberg, Hamilton, Con College, ect

Thanks for your help!

i doubt that LACs have BFAs. This is a professional training degrees with a certain percentage of time I believe required for this type of degree, and LACs don’t generally offer this. Skidmore I think offers a BS in theater, but I don’t really know what that distinction is. You might add Trinity College to that list. You probably can take a conservatory semester somewhere; i know there are options for this. My daughter has a friend at Trinity who is planning to spend a semester in NYC doing this. I believe Conn College has an affiliation with the O’Neill theater.

At an LAC, you will not have as much classroom time devoted to actor training, but there are likely to be numerous performance opportunities, both department and student-sponsored.

Very few small liberal arts colleges offer a BFA. Ones that come to mind that are either LACS or small universities that have BFAs…

Otterbein
Ohio Wesleyan
Millikin
SUNY Purchsse
Ithaca College
Coastal Carolina
Marymount Manhattan

Emerson is small but not a regular liberal arts college but more specialized.

If you want a LAC, look very closely at their BA curriculum in theater as SOME will have performance track or acting track.

Look at the threads here that discuss BA programs, and you’ll get a lot more suggestions. You’ve made an excellent start.

One school I’d suggest is Goucher College in Baltimore. Read through the theatre courses, and you’ll see a very in-depth approach to Acting, as well as a myriad of other theatre subjects.

Get suggestions here and elsewhere for small schools with great theatre depts, and at the same time look through the curricula at small schools that look nice to you in general. Many LACs have lovely arts programs and facilities, and you’ll soon get an understanding of what kind of curriculum appeals to you in particular.

Okay! Thanks!

Does anyone know anything about the quaility of the theater program at Skidmore, Muhlenberg, or Kenyon? Anything about the teaching, facillities, performance oppurtunities, ect. would be great! If you have any info about the school in general, that’s cool too! :)
