BFA Audition... can't sing

I wanted to audition for one until I realized that I had to sing in the audition and I can’t really sing that well nor am I very well educated in that area.

  • I mean is Alexander Hamilton a good song if I cut it I really don't know what to do right now

No singing was required for a BFA in Acting except for SUNY Purchase.

Yea, but will they judge if you cannot sing that well?

UNCSA and Juilliard are among those that also have a song requirement. If you’re set on auditioning for program with this requirement, maybe you could get a few voice lessons between now and your audition. You could talk to a music teacher in your school. You don’t have to prepare something that will blow the auditors away. They want to see your musicality. Lessons, even a few, could get you pointed in the right direction for song choice based on your voice type, range, etc.

Minn Guthrie asked her to sing my D’s year- though that may have been because she had a number of musicals listed on her resume.

And btw - Alexander Hamilton would NOT be a good choice, general rule of thumb is nothing that is currently on bway

Thanks you guys…But does anyone know some songs I could get started with.

My D sang at both her UMinn/Guthrie and SUNY Purchase auditions. I believe she was also asked to sing at one of her walk-ins as well (LIU or New School?). They are looking for something else to have in your toolkit – basically can you carry a tune. Choose something easily in your range - it’s not an MT audition. My D can carry a tune but is not an MT singer. She worked with a local voice teacher and choir director to work a few songs in her mid range. Agree with the advice above - can you find a local voice teacher (or the choir director in your school) to help? It is difficult for posters to provide song choice as non of us knows your voice/range.

@artskids is right, we don’t know you or your vocal range, so we couldn’t make a suggestion. We may assume that you’re male because you mention Alexander Hamilton, but we don’t even know that for sure. I think it would be totally worth it to work with someone to help you with that since you say that you don’t even know where to begin. But at the very least, if you know your voice type/range, you can google (ie: tenor auditions songs) to get a list of what other people have used. And @toowonderful is right that auditors warn against choosing from a current show. It’s possible/likely that the auditors have seen that show recently and you don’t want them comparing you to an adult, trained, professional voice (although in BFA Acting, they really are just wanting to see if you can carry a tune).

Good luck to you!

My S was asked to sing at CMU three years ago, just FYI, though we hear that they’re not really assessing singing ability, more looking for vocal range and timbre as it relates to acting.

They are also looking for confidence – so even if you “think” you can’t sing, go in and sing/speak a strong song and have fun with it.

Look at the video with audition tips for UNCSA that was posted earlier on this forum. They talk specifically about this and say while they require a song they do it just to Know what they are getting into for four years and that many admitted students are not singers. Not like an MT audition. If you like the program go for it!

I don’t think anyone without an UNSCA email address can see that video

It is on the public Facebook page for the school. I don’t have an email and can see it. I tried to copy link but it didn’t work.
In Facebook do a search for university of north Carolina school of the arts. It will be the one with the logo as picture -black logo with UNCSA in it. Scroll down to a video from last Friday that says drama audition tips. Hope that helps.

Thanks! I did look at some videos on the UNCSA page, but couldn’t find that one.

For the video, its available on university of north Carolina school of the arts FB page, not the UNCSA pages

The singing should be the least of your concern. It’s not an MT audition. Just do something you love singing and have fun with it.

Thanks
