My daughter is a junior in high school looking into theatre and acting programs. We've noticed that many colleges and universities require singing for auditions and are wondering which ones don't as well as once you are in a college program are you required to sing as part of auditions for shows? My son goes to Muhlenberg and before being cast in shows they are required to sing. So I'm presuming that she would not be applying there. Any advice on this would be great as we are beginning to consider which program may be the best fit for her. Thanks!

Just from my limited experience of the audition process:

Acting students at Roosevelt CCPA can’t be cast in musicals (and vice versa, I think).

At CMU, acting students can’t be in musicals but MT kids can be in plays.

DePaul doesn’t even have MT.

I think Syracuse integrates MT and acting pretty closely and either type can try out for musicals or straight plays.

My son was asked to sing at only one non-MT audition (CMU). And, FWIW, when auditors ask an acting candidate to sing, they are not always looking for pure vocal training and ability (i.e., they can tell things about your speaking voice from hearing you sing).

It seems to be very important to be flexible and do what the auditors ask of you. So with that in mind, it wouldn’t hurt for your daughter to have one simple song that’s in her range that she can pull out as necessary. (My S had very limited vocal training when he auditioned last year, but he prepped two songs anyway and is glad he did.)

Good luck.

Boston University seldom does musicals. Auditioners are not asked to sing, either at college admissions auditions or casting auditions.

Some auditioned theatre programs will ask you to sing at their admissions audition, but as stated above, they are not interested in your singing ability but rather your general vocal quality.

Don’t let DePaul fool you,a lot of their Acting students have strong M.T. backgrounds if you would like to pursue singing they many allow you to take private voice in there music dept, and they have a group of students that put on side shows after classes.DePaul puts on a musical every other year last year was Spring Awakening. But,remember Acting auditions do not ask you to sing!

Purchase requires BFA actors to sing at their audition, though they do not have an MT program. I don’t remember if any other schools did, but… it’s fairly rare, and if you’re a great actor and they want you they’re not going to let the song stop them.

UNCSA and Juilliard required singing. Rutgers advertised this past year that you would be asked to sing but no one at the session my daughter attended was actually asked to sing.

I agree with Gwen’s comment that I would not let a singing requirement keep you from applying.

Don’t be intimadated by “singing requirements”.

If you are auditioning for a program that is NOT Musical Theatre, and they ask you to sing at your audition, they are just trying to judge certain qualities of your voice. Just pick a song that is easy for you to sing, that doesn’t have any difficult notes and doesn’t require “belting”. 16 bars isn’t really that much. Anyone who wants to be an actor should be able to get through 16 bars of “Happy Birthday”.

I am certainly not a singer, but I could find some song that I could sing 16 bars of if it was required for an audition.

In an acting career there are going to be obstacles that need to be faced with courage. If you are intimidated by having to sing 16 bars of a song of your own choice, what are you going to do when a REAL obstacle comes along?
