I don’t mean to repost a thread that has already been answered so I apologize in advance, but I couldn’t seem to find anything that answered my question.

I am a high school Junior-trained dancer for my entire life-originally classical ballet but more modern & jazz now. In high school, however, I branched out to theatre and got many great dance roles, dance captain, and many leads in straight plays as well.

I’m an extremely strong dancer, decent actress, and mediocre singer. Singing has always been a setback for me. I started studying voice only a year and a half ago, and have made lots of progress, but still don’t have that super strong MT quality.

In the future, I really just aspire to be a swing/understudy or dance captain in musicals, not a huge leading lady. However, I’m not sure if it’s better to pursue a BFA dance or BFA MT degree? What schools have BFA MT programs that accept/like strong dancers? What schools have BFA Dance that also have voice lessons? Which one would be better to ultimately pursue for my intended career?

Check out Roosevelt/CCPA. They have both a BFA MT dance emphasis and BFA MT voice emphasis majors. MT dancers also take private voice as part of the curriculum. They also have BFA acting.

You may want to post this in the Musical Theatre forum, but in my opinion (which you should take as a grain of salt) would be to go for MT (or maybe apply to both types of programs) some BFA MTs that are dance heavy are Pace, CCM, and BoCo!

In general I would say stick with your fort while working on your other areas. It is a real challenge to find an MT program that can really nurture your dance training. Plus it may be difficult to get into an auditioned program as a 'mediocre" singer. Look for schools that are strong in both and allow some cross over. Boco is a great choice if you can afford it. Point Park would be excellent and offers a musical theater minor to dancers.

My advice would be to go the BFA Dance route. Most dance calls are for hard core dancers who devoted 100% to dance and not 30%-40% even at a great MT dance program.

I agree with shellbell1 and beenthereMTdad - BFA MT is so incredibly competitive I’m not sure a “mediocre” voice will get you in even if you have the greatest dance audition. PPU is a great fit, we are from the area and my S has attended dance intensives there. I think you should find a program with a strong dance and MT program where there is crossover but audition as a dancer. Unless you are being hard on yourself and you are a better than average singer.
