How important are the phone interviews for BHP? I had one in late November. Also, how soon should I expect to get a decision? I really want to know!

Haha, well this doesn't matter. Because they called me today. I am in. Only waited 3 weeks to hear a decision :]

feladis, can u tell me about the admission rate for McCombs since ur in. I am trying to get in there. I am in the Top 5% with a SAT score of 1300 (math and CR) and I got tons of ECs and can get a tons of Teacher Recs. Wat r my chances of gettin into McCombs (not honors tho...no chance -_-)

My younger son applied for BHP but has not had an interview yet. Is the interview vital? When can he expect to hear anything (as he applied Early Program)? And how?

I applied by Nov 1 and got one Nov 28 (oddly my birthday). As far as I know, you have to get an interview to be admitted into BHP. If you don't get one, it isn't a good sign.

Admission rate for McCombs... what I heard when I visited UT is it's strictly based on rank until they fill 75% of the spots. Everyone gets in automatically around the top 2.5-3% (I was accepted the day after I turned in my app!). After that, it's graded 'holistically.' So reloadedxp, I think you have a chance for McCombs, especially if you have good scores and ECs.

feladis, congrats on BHP, it is a great honor to get in the program. My son applied last year as a Val with many awards, great leadership and ECs and didn't get in. His good friend who had the same exact stats (GPA and test scores) got in. We don't know why she did and he didn't, but there must be a reason!

I had one last year in late November. I would say the phone interview is pretty important- it is conducted by an alumni and gives BHP a chance to get to know the applicant personally as opposed to just a name on a piece of paper. I thought I did pretty well, though fibbed a little. I received my acceptance letter just a couple weeks later (Early-Mid December).

I applied to BHP by the november 1st deadline. I got accepted into Mccombs but I haven't heard anything back from BHP yet. I'm in the top 2% of my class (30/1038). why haven't they responded yet? all the waiting is really ticking me off!

Yea, I think the admission process is weird. No idea how they organize the phone calls. I actually almost didn't pick up the alumni's call because it looked like a wrong number since it was all the way from Maryland!

Here are my stats if you guys are interested, nothing really special:

SAT I: 730 CR, 780 MA, 800 WR
SAT II: 780 MA II, 740 USHIST
Rank: 3/488

One of my biggest concerns though about BHP is I dont think it is widely recognized outside of Texas. I want to be in a program that will attract recruiters from elsewhere in the country.

so they call you first and then send you notification by mail after the interview-- or the other way around?

yea, they called me up to tell me i was in, and then i got mail notification a few days later.

no, i mean did they tell you an interview date through the mail or did they just call randomly?

You have a 1510 CR+M, and you're in the top 1%

oh they called me randomly to schedule the interview.

It actually depends on who is interviewing you. I was sent an email to schedule an interview, while others I know received a call.

my son got an email to schedule the call, the interviewer missed the appointed time (while my son sat around waiting for the call), he emailed again apologizing profusely and reset a new time, then called.

Wow, that must have been really horrible.

More irritating than anything. I wish my son had gotten in the program, the interview went well and he looked like a good candidate, but it wasn't meant to be. He could try for it at the end of this semester, he did really well this past semester (with an unbelievably crazy schedule), but I don't know if he wants it now. He is going for the PPA (MPA) program and doesn't think he needs both.

Crazy thing, people we know (partners with accounting firms or accountants with large corps) who find out that he is going for the PPA program are already vying for him to intern. He has a meeting with a partner at Ernst & Young this Friday to introduce him around to the recruiters. It is GREAT to see that there is such a demand for kids coming out of the program!!!

Does he want to do photography or something?

The PPA is the professional public accounting track at the McCombs School of Business. It is a 5 year masters program, you graduate with your Masters in Public Accounting (I think they are calling it the MPA now). You apply after your sophomore year (after you have taken the req'd courses) and if you are accepted, you are in that track instead of just the BBA track.

You are doing Bus. Honors, right? When my son went up there for his tour senior year, he was told that about 80% of business honors kids also go for the PPA, so you might want to check it out. The info is on the McCombs website. It is called the Integrated MPA where you earn your masters concurrently with your BBA.

Ernst & Young is one of the "Big 4" accounting firms along with Price Waterhouse Cooper, Deloitte & Touche and KPMG. If you are interested in auditing or accounting, these are plumb internships - so wish my son well!
