Bias in nationality

I am from China. Believe or not. According to tons of feedback in Chinese Studying Abroad Forum. Chinese are very hard to get the offer from UNC. The only result is the Chinese students in UNC are very scarce. i am an RD applicant. while waiting, my dream has broken by this unfair.

UNC must take 81% of its freshman class from North Carolina. This is fair because the taxpayers of North Carolina fund the University. The remaining 18% come from the remaining 49 states and other countires. I don’t believe that there is any intentional bias against China, but since China is the largest country in the world, they probably have one of the largest groups of applicants. As such, the number of students accepted from China is probably about the same, or even greater than other nations, but the percentage is lower because of the number of applicants. I don’t have any data to back this theory up, but I have a feling that it is probably close to the truth.

That means the Chinese guy who gets Offer from UNC are exceptional. They match yale or Harvard and UNC is their safe school. Although they get Offer from UNC, they will definitely not go to UNC. So, UNC should change their strategies in evaluation process.

So they should decline appealing candidates in favor of worse ones?

While I see your concern, the only way to alleviate this would to get rid of the in-state mandate, which will never happen, because it would be political suicide for any politician to propose abolishing it. The thing is the current policy isn’t anymore unfair to Chinese applicant than it is to applicants from other states and countries. I understand the frustration that you and many other no-NC residents feel, but you have to understand that the schools constitutional mandate is to provide a quality affordable education to the people of the State of North Carolina, and that this mandate is funded by NC residents.

Maybe they reject a lot of people from China because they are not qualified.

From your posts it seems you have a tenuous grasp on the English language as a whole.

Playing the race card would be a little bit clich

I couldn’t agree more Ryan and Tony.

And it also seems as though your basing your opinions off of a few cases that you have heard of. You don’t know the exact statistics of Chinese applicants to UNC. China is a big country and I’m sure there are many people that have applied to UNC from China that you have not heard of.

If we deserve to get into UNC, then we get in. It’s as simple as that. So, if you’ve worked hard, if you’re a stellar applicant and you deserve it more than the other international and OOS kids competing for that 20% of the slots, then you’ll be accepted.
