India is a land of diversity. China is the world's workshop! India is a country made up of many nations!(so to say). Such rich diversity in one country can not be found in any other nation.

However, it is tragic that lots of colleges in US seem to have a quota system(in the name of diversity) in admissions in terms of China Vs Indian Sub-Continent- which includes Pakistan, bangladesh, Nepal etc

So if China gets 10 seats, India gets 3 seats! Why, because Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal have to get 3 seats each.

This is ridiculous and the world should knoow!

china have 56 ethinities...
a good college shall not have quota per country of int'l students...
but they usually have a quota for overalll int student

We are not talking about ethnicities, we are talking about cultural diversity.

Hello, I respect the rich cultural heritage of China. But, my objection is to the quota system-India, which is "unity in diversity", is equal to China in every way (Ofcourse, in a healthy sense!). But, being equated with Bangladesh, in terms of informal quota system!, is definitely not proper.

Bangladesh is equivalent in size to one of the 30 indian states, you see!

plainb, where do you get this info? I don't think the quota system you mentioned is reseanable, maybe cuz these years Chinese applicants population is raising rapidly.

The adcoms look to 'round out' their class is a given.

When it comes to internationals,in order to achieve diversity, they spread their intake as wide as possible. My point is Indian Subcontinent is being viewed as one unit in terms diversity.

You can check out statistics of any institution for this.I wouldn't like to name any institution.

As regards increase in Chinese applications, that can't be higher than Indian applications. It is a given that Indians represent the largest chunk of international students in US. May be, this is going against them when it comes to elite institutions.

where do you get the data from? I thought Chinese has the most student in the US and I never thought that India has such diversity. What I know is there are north and southern Indian (excuse for being ignorant since you seem to be ignorant :)) while Chinese has the uighur, tibetan, han, mongolia, etc.

also I found this statement false, Indonesia has 300 different culture jammed packed into one nation. There are thousands of dialect and languages. Some language even use different alphabet. Get your facts right man...

Let's control our emotions a bit and examine dispassionately. Indonesia is one religion and India is a melting pot of all the religions of the world. You are talking about dialects. I am talking about more than 15 written and spoken languages-with rich literature,1000 year history etc

Any way, culture is a complex topic; You can check up about India and I will check up about China. fine!

As regards largest chunk of students, give me a minute, I will give you the link to the most authoritative source: Chronicle of Higher Education, The US Magazine.

Frankly speaking I haven't heard of a quota system like this. I wonder if you could show some evidence of this?

Besides assuming a quota system does exist, what exactly are you annoyed about? If you are worried about fairness, then you should be asking why a quota system exists at all. Not whether India should get more seats because of greater diversity, surely that's the wrong question to ask. Plus don't tell me adcoms are so ignorant as to know nothing about India's diversity.

But it raises an interesting issue- it seems from this thread that a lot of us here don't know a great deal about each other's cultures. Maybe there should be some effort to remedy that?

1stly, what has China being the world's workshop got anything to do with it?

2ndly, for all you know, China might be sharing quota with Taiwan, HK and Macau, and of course Tibet (One China policy baby woohoo)

3rdly, and most imptly China's population is larger, with a much higher literacy rate, and a higher per capita GDP, but lags behind India in terms of student numbers in the U.S....your complaints are absolutely baseless

agree with NBZ. i think adcoms are definitely informed enough to realize that Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal etc are different countries with distinct languages, religious breakdowns, cultures etc. And I am quite certain that they also know of the diversity within India as well.

don't know where you are getting this quota stuff from plainb
