Bicycle vacations

I recall a thread recently that discussed bicycle vacations, trips. I have tried every combination of bicycle, bike, cycle with tour, trip, vacation and haven’t been able to find the thread. Does anyone recall where this thread was located? Maybe it was tacked onto another travel thread not specifically bicycle? TIA for any help :slightly_smiling_face:

Do you want guided group or self guided? How challenging?

Guided group, easy to moderate. Not entirely sure though, something my H and I want to start exploring. We would probably start with a domestic trip, Maine, Vermont or Oregon, Washington possibly and then would like to look at international trips, most likely Europe.
Thanks!

You might be thinking of this thread: Outdoor lovers, plan a trip for me

It’s mainly hiking/walking trips, but bicycle trips are mentioned a few times.

No, it was a less recent thread. I’m thinking last 6 months? but my time memory is not always accurate. It may have been in another trip thread that veered off into someone asking about bicycle tours because it got mentioned and there was quite a bit of info about that specifically.

Was it one of these threads?

Yes! Thank you @Sweetgum the first one is the one I was thinking of!!
So bike tours was mentioned in the second sentence and I searched that specific term both within CC and with google and it didn’t come up!

Backroads has a great reputation, but you could do two or even three uTracks trips for the same budget. Intrepid has been good too. Have fun searching!

Thank you so much for the info! Now I’m going to bookmark that thread!

Glad I could help. I searched on “biking” and did an advanced search (I’m on my laptop) to limit it to the Parent Cafe.

We have done guided bike trips in Vermont and Oregon, but not Maine (we did the Finger Lakes of NY instead). We did Maine on our own, but there are guided trips that look really good. We considered this company Bike Tours in Maine, Canada & Europe | Summer Feet, and another lesser known company, but we decided the company didn’t seem to have their act together very well.
Backroads and Sojourn (gosojourn.com) both have trips there.

Thank you so much, this is really helpful! And I may PM you in the future when we really start to plan something, I’m looking ahead to next year sometime. I like to start researching pretty far ahead and let ideas percolate.

I was going to send you a PM, but I can’t.
Some of these travel companies have sales, especially around the holidays.
It may be worth subscribing to emails.

bike trips and other guided tours can be on the small side because of the accommodation size limits (for example inn-to-inn biking). I know someone who did a bike tour in Vermont a few years ago, just signed up online and showed up for the trip. Turned out that a college alumni association had offered that trip date to alums and even sent someone from the alumni office to accompany them. The friend was the only rider not associated with the college on the trip. The had a few college rah-rah events, too (friend not invited). I think it was lousy of the tour company not to block off that tour date or inform people signing up. So hence my advice, before booking a specific trip call the company and ask if that trip is just the general public signing up or if some group has purchased most of the seats.

That was always a good idea to check when booking a cruise. One would need to discover if any large groups were signed up - sometimes various venues would be reserved only for the groups, so other passengers couldn’t get the full experience. Usually one could find such groups by searching the ship and date of sailing, but Cruise Critic was another good source.

Usually when something like that is occurring, I’ve seen the trip marked as “private.”

Thank you, that is really good information that I wouldn’t have thought of to ask. Also, I will sign up for the emails, it’s always nice to get a deal!
