BIG 10-2012/2013 and on

The future of the BIG 10

Which BIG 10 universities will be on the rise/decline research-wise, academically, athletically, overall influence, their reputation/image etc. in 2012/2013 and for the years to come? Also, what universities could put a little more emphasis into doing certain things better and what are they?

Big Ten Schools:
-Indiana University
-Purdue University
-Michigan State University
-University of Illinois Champaign
-Northwestern University
-The Ohio State University
-Pennsylvania State University
-University of Iowa
-University of Michigan Ann Arbor
-University of Minnesota Twin Cities
-University of Wisconsin Madison

GO BIG 10!!

You forgot the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

i apologize cornhuskers

Just waiting for sparkeye to take over this thread…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

haha c’mon he loves his school! just as you love U of M…i applied as a transfer student to Ross and was of course denied but my buddy from Oakland Community college got in after his freshmen year!! granted he held a 4.0 35 ACT and a bunch of ecs/phenomenal recommendations but still i thought it was unheard of!

^^^Your buddy had a 35 ACT score and went to OCC?

Right on, OTOTA457!! Me along with 2000+ academics across the nation when it comes to tOSU’s ascension into the top echelon of higher education.

Hence, I would prefer to take a back seat on this one… Thanks, rjk!! :)

zzzzzzzzzzzzzz ;-)

Yea haha… hes one of the kids whos incredibly brilliant/put no effort into school… yet as our high school years progressed the frequency and severity of his poor life discussions greatly increased…HOWEVER hes got his act together for the most part today thankfully…I envy the kid. through some sort of aptitude testing he claims hes actually a genius which i fully believe…

as for guys like me the quote “if you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough” pretty much sums up life

Big Ten Schools (CIC)

(Short term <5 year, Long term >5 year)

***Indiana University - Bloomington +3/B
***Purdue University - W. Lafayette+4/B
***Michigan State University - E. Lansing +5/B
***University of Illinois UC -5/B
***Northwestern University +3/B
***University of Chicago +4/B
***The Ohio State University - Columbus +10/B
***Pennsylvania State University UP -10/B
***University of Iowa - Iowa City +2/B
***University of Michigan - Ann Arbor +5/B
***University of Minnesota - Twin Cities -3/B
*University of Wisconsin - Madison (-Stable-)/B
***University of Nebraska - Lincoln +5/B

I can give good reasons as to why I rated the above as such, but I am too lazy to type them out now. Anyhow, please take my post with a grain of salt!! lol

I can’t speak for other universities but judging by the number of students in my daughter’s high school this year and last who were denied from Ohio State, I would say they are definitely raising standards. I think their average ACT score is over 28 now.

My daughter turned down Kenyon for Ohio State…fwiw.

^^

Yes, according to the lastest offocial statistics, the ACT composite is 26-30. The SAT equivalent for MR is 1140-1360.

About 26,000 applicants and a bit over 16,500 admitted students. The reverse is that 9,500 students were not admitted and that translates into 1 out 3 applicants not making it. In so many words, lots are not admitted but much more are accepted. This is not much different from the University of California system as they ALSO accept upwards of 60 percent all applicants.

http://oaa.osu.edu/irp/publisher_surveys/IRP_2012_Survey_Main.pdf

^^

So, in your professional opinion, would it be the same again after the upcoming 2012-2013 Common Application at Ohio State? Also, the official data link was for 2011, 2012 is yet to be released next month which would prove to be even more selective as school continues to rise academically. Lastly, University of California System may have similar acceptance rate, but not all UC campuses have the same caliber of students as Ohio State based on standardized scores such as the ACT.

Ohio State
http://collegeapps.about.com/od/collegeprofiles/p/OSU.htm

Data Source
National Center for Educational Statistics

P.S. 80% of tOSU applicants submit ACT instead of SAT.

Which University of California system?

-Indiana University = Moving up
-Purdue University = Staying the Same
-Michigan State University = Moving up
-University of Illinois Champaign = Slightly going up
-Northwestern University = Same
-The Ohio State University = Moving up
-Pennsylvania State University = Moving down
-University of Iowa = Not sure
-University of Michigan Ann Arbor = Same
-University of Minnesota Twin Cities = Same
-University of Wisconsin Madison = Same

In terms of Athletics and Academics

Is there more than one?

[University of California - Campuses - The University of California campuses provide environments that foster world-class educational and research opportunities, generating a wide range of public benefits and services.](Campuses & locations | University of California)

At this time, all one can do is guess or speculate. The final numbers for enrolled students will be available in a few months. How different they are from the the current estimates is unknown. What is however known is that all schools are always wildly optimistic and vocal in April and May and almost mute in October.

It does seem that tOSU could only go up in selectivity. The opposite would be quite hard.

I guess I don’t understand then as the numbers (acceptance rate) don’t add up:
Berkeley: 22%
UCLA: 23%
UCSD: 38%
Davis: 45%
Santa Barbara: 46%
Irvine: 45%
Santa Cruz: 65%
Riverside: 76%

^^ Perhaps adding UC-Merced would help? :p

[UC Merced Profile - SAT Scores and Admissions Data for UC Merced](UC Merced: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA)

Actually, UC-Merced’s 50% ACT score is similar to Ohio State regional campuses (Newark, Marion, Mansfield & Lima).

Call a spade a spade, no point to be disingenuous… :)

Frankly, I do not see the point of comparing acceptance rate of UC System with Ohio State, especially when the state of California has 3.27 times more population than Ohio. Anyway, here is an update:

New Common App member overshadows the others

The Ohio State University
July 4, 2012
By: Craig Meister

As rising high school seniors set out to start completing their college applications later this summer, those hoping to get away with only using the Common Application will have one major new college to consider.

The Ohio State University, a major research university that has up until this coming admissions season only maintained its own institutional application, will start accepting the Common App for applicants to its main, Columbus campus.

**The 2012-2013 Common Application will be available online August 1, 2012, **and students applying to Ohio State will have to complete both the Common Application and the Ohio State supplemental form. Yet, this is not the only change to Ohio State’s admissions procedures.

The university’s December 1 priority deadline has been eliminated; however, the university still encourages students to apply early in the fall and by the final application deadline of February 1, 2013.

Meanwhile, information collected on the Common Application and Ohio State supplement will inform not only the admissions process, but also Honors & Scholars and Morrill Scholars processes, eliminating the need for separate applications.

Additionally, Ohio State will require students to submit one teacher recommendation with each application.

Ohio residents who want to apply directly to a Regional campus and domestic and international transfer students will continue to apply via the application Ohio State has used for many years.
