BIG 2018-2019 Non-Resident Tuition Hike

For anyone out-of-state who is calculating total costs over 4 years, this may be of interest:

https://www.twincities.com/2017/12/14/umn-to-raise-nonresident-tuition-15-percent-next-fall/

Base tuition will rise a whopping $3748 or about 15% to $28,734

Based on last year’s increase, I estimate fees may rise by about 5.5% to roughly $1,780

Total non-resident tuition plus fees could be over $30,500 for new non-resident freshman starting fall 2018-2019 semester.

Based on last year, it would be reasonable to assume that future increases for returning students would be around 5.5% for tuition, fees, room & board for the following three years.

That would make room & board more than $10,600 for a double at Middlebrook or 17th Avenue with an anytime dining plan for 2018-2019. This would be a little lower with a superblock dorm or lesser meal plan of course.

Estimated total 2018-2019 tuition, fees, room & board would be $41,100, plus or minus a percent or two. This does not include books, supplies, transportation, personal or other expenses. The UMN-TC website estimates these could add $5000 more, making it roughly $46,000 estimated total cost of attendance.

For continuing sophomores in 2019-2020 that would be almost $43,400 if the ~5.5% increases are maintained (or close to $49,000 total cost of attendance)

Apologies if I made any errors, please feel free to correct!

If you are in a state like Illinois that locks in tuition, room and board costs for residents at the first year rates, those 5.5% cost of living increases really add up…

It was only a matter of time unfortunately. At least they’re hiking non residents (here in PA, it’s been discussed to eliminate in state tuition breaks)

My estimates were pretty close- the updated “official” estimate is $30,514 here but not finalized until July: https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/costsaid/tuition.html . Tuition and housing expenses vary depending on the dorm, room, meal plan, etc. Increases for returning students are likely to be held to around 5.5% for the second, third and fourth years, subject to inflation that seems like it could be on an upward trend with current fiscal policy.

A letter we received confirmed that they intend to “limit future non-resident tuition increases to no more than 5.5% each year, if they raise tuition, for your student’s class of 2022.”

So tuition is now estimated to be $30438 (down from $30514). A 5.5% increase would be $1674 and change for my daughter’s sophomore year. When will it no longer be estimate, but set?

My impression is that the board approved everything in late June so it is now final for 2018-2019. Perhaps the fees and such can still vary until bills are issued, I’m not sure. I think the proposal for 2019-2020 should be around the end of the year,

Totally sucks, but it wasn’t a surprise. I just wish the grant also got bigger.
