Big Decision

I really want to get into University of Pittsburgh. It's my dream. I have 2 options. Since it is rolling admission, it's first come first serve. I want to get into the Swanson School of Engineering. I can either apply in about 2 weeks, or wait until the end of October. I am hoping to increase my SAT score by a few hundred on October 6th. Do you guys think I would get in applying before I take the SAT again?

I am from out of state, my GPA is only an 89.5 unweighted. I have no C's and no grades below an 85. My important HS Level classes are as following:

8th- Living Environmet, Enr Algebra, Spanish
9th- Enr Earth Science, Enr Geometry, Global 1, English, Spanish
10th- Algebra 2, Chemistry, Global 2, English, Spanish
11th- AP Physics, Precalculus, US History, English, Spanish
12th current- AP Stats, AP Calc AB, AP Biology, AP Economics, English

SAT score is R: 500 M: 680 W: 530. On my NYS Regents, I have received almost all 90's besides Spanish, which I found boring and hard. I got a 5 on my AP Physics test. Class rank is top 35% (not good). My activities resume will be decent, but not amazing at all. I plan to dedicate lots of time for a great college essay. Also, I'll have 2-3 recommendations from teacher, which should be good letters.

I am looking to go in for Civil Engineering.

Please let me know, as I have a big decision to make.

Wait until you retake the SAT/aim to get a 600 on each section. As long as you apply to Pitt by Novemberish you should be OK.

I’m just worried that once the school starts to get full, the committee will become more selective. I am capable of a 750+ on math. I am getting a book to study daily to hopefully improve the reading part to a 600.

I’ll be applying as soon as I get results back from the SAT so around October 25th.

Because of where I live (Pittsburgh), I know of a ton of people who applied/applying this year/have attended multiple information sessions. I have a friend who applied fairly early with a 3.8 and got rejected and others with lower stats who got in later. But none of the people I know who got in (which is a decent number since basically everybody with good grades in Pittsburgh Public Schools applies to Pitt) had higher test scores then that. Like I said wait, I think it is unlikely you will get in with your current test scores, so it is better to wait an extra month.

Thanks, I’ll wait and study hard. People you know have already been accepted/denied for Fall 2013?

Not yet, all my friends/classmates are lazy/will end up probably applying in November. If I remember correctly Pitt does not accept the common app which makes it take even longer for people here to bother applying.

Oh I see. Do I have a good chance of getting in if I get, say: R: 600 M: 740 W:620 ???

Pitts 2011
Test Scores – 25th / 75th Percentile
SAT Critical Reading: 570 / 680
SAT Math: 600 / 690
SAT Writing: 560 / 660

Your CR & Writing are below 25 percentile. You should try to improve on those sections. Your goal should be 625 CR & 610 W. You will be in the middle of admitted applicants.

OR, try ACT
