Big New Server for CC

To support the growth of the College Confidential community, we’re more than doubling our server capacity by adding another state-of-the-art server to our forum data center.

One of our key objectives here at CC is to keep our forum very responsive - it’s reflected in our page design and feature set. We know that not everyone has a high-bandwidth connection, and try to keep the pages light and efficient.

Sometimes, though, lean software design isn’t enough, and you have to throw more hardware at the problem. So, we’re doing just that with our new server. We expect this will keep things snappy as we get busy in the fall and spring.

You may notice a brief outage when the upgrade is underway - it should be less than an hour, and we plan to do it in the morning (EDT) when usage is lightest.

Thanks to all of our members who have created the need for the additional capacity i)*, and to our diligent mod crew for keeping CC a friendly and welcoming place where students and parents can come to learn about and discuss college admissions.

I’ll contribute if you make me a SuperMod :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks as always for keeping this site up and running. Is the update planned for tonight?

PS - Whats with the link to the vBulletin Control Panel?

What is a server? I’m not too tech-savvy.

how do people become mods, and admins?

Not sure about the timing - some time in the next few days. We’re waiting for an infrastructure upgrade.

Servers are the computers that run the forum software, store the messages, etc. All web sites live on servers.

Until the Google Grid provides a functionally limitless amount of storage space sometime in 2006.

Glad to hear about the new server. CC is definitely in need of it!

Someone who says “Welcome to McDonalds. How can I serve you?”

Okay, now that I got that out of my system. Here is one definition:
ser´ver) (n.) A computer or device on a network that manages network resources. For example, a file server is a computer and storage device dedicated to storing files. Any user on the network can store files on the server. A print server is a computer that manages one or more printers, and a network server is a computer that manages network traffic. A database server is a computer system that processes database queries.

In other words, the new server holds a lot of college confidential forum data and allows computer users (us) to access that information quickly over the internet.

Thanks to the Mods and Admins - you do a great job!

Many thanks to all of those working behind the scenes to keep this place a-going. CC rules!

Congratulations. I’d also like to thank the administrators, moderators, parents, and students who make this such an interesting place to gather information about colleges.

Thanx. You guys really work hard to make cc useful.

what? cc will be done for an hour?? What will I do?

Thanks Mods… you guys truely make the difference…

What day should be expect there to be an outage?

Hm…I’m going to ask the question that’s just waiting to be asked (self-proclaimed computer geek brethren, where you been? I just beat you all)…how much RAM does it have?

Tthat aside, the link to zantedeschia in the first post actually points to the link that allows admins to edit him…scratches chin… anyway, it doesn’t really matter, since he posted right after, but anyway…

Go new server! May it kick the asses of many lame hack attempts.

I’m a she, thanks :stuck_out_tongue:

And now that we have a bigger server, do you think we can change that 60 second rule…?

but those aren’t even related issues entirely. Slightly, but I thought it was mostlly to prevent carelss, thoughtless posts and spamming

I know they weren’t really related, but it’s unfair for people who just type fast. And now that the new server can handle more posts, why not change it to like 30 second rule…hehe
