Big News From Harry and Meghan - Royal Family Stepping Back

The U.K. hasn’t yet made any provision for vaccinated individuals to bypass testing or quarantine (fingers crossed it will happen in the next few months as we have some flights booked for later in the year). But the US isn’t a red list country so you can quarantine at home and then “test to release” after 5 days. In addition “diplomats” and “crown servants” are exempt from quarantine, which may apply in this case (although the detailed description is not on point): Travel to England from another country – coronavirus (COVID-19) rules - GOV.UK

Gotta love Marina Hyde. The tributes to Prince Philip have revealed so much – about other people | Marina Hyde | The Guardian

‘I suddenly clicked that American showbiz being so resolutely on Meghan’s “side” is partly rooted in Hollywood’s gorgeously atavistic commercialism. They must feel pure incomprehension that the royal family should have lost/driven away/whatever one of their biggest box-office stars. In this reading, the Windsors are like a golden-age studio that has simply failed to hang on to a highly bankable performer. Ultimately it was a talent management failure – proper showbiz sacrilege.’

Edited to add - because apparently it is necessary - that I am quoting a passage from the satirist’s article I linked to. Operative words being satirist and quoting.
That’s why the passage is, you know, in quotes.

Here is an excellent column by Piers Morgan on Prince Philip.

Oh, who is going to watch the funeral.

I’m definitely going to watch.

I want to watch as well. Is the funeral at 3pm UK time (DST)?

Coverage starts at 930 EST on NBC. I’m guessing other networks are covering as well. The funeral itself starts at 10 am but there is a procession to the chapel before that.

Thank you so much for the information! I will definitely be watching

Really, one of the biggest box-office stars? She was an actress on a cable TV show. She was on a few Hallmark channel Christmas movies, and she used to hold a suitcase on Howie Mandel’s game show.

I have no trouble comprehending that the royal family drove her away (or really didn’t care when she found her driver’s license and passport and drove herself away)

Funeral coverage will start at 9am EST on CNN.

I think the “box office” @Tigerle is referring to is the royal family. I think the younger royals are more popular than Charles’ generation.

What do you think of the Queen having them wear suits instead of uniforms so Harry isn’t left out?

@momoffour I think the reasoning also had to do with Prince Andrew who has stepped back from royal duties due to his controversy.

I think suits are the right thing. The queen is making a nice gesture to two young men in her family who are not military. I think that is very gracious.

Sorry…didn’t mean to reply to Soozviet. I hate these two reply choices but that’s a whole other thread!

The royal family is a complete anachronism based on affective bonds and political loyalties that no longer apply. They are all “celebrities” now and I guess that Harry, jumping to the celebrity world in his choice of spouse, is in a sense leveraging the archaic prestige of his family towards something else. But there is really no way that the royal glamour can be made progressive, “woke,” whatever. It is retrograde. Harry is having an identity crisis because he is the inheritor of a celebrity status from his mother that he does not have the resources to sustain. His older brother will get the crown, the legitimacy etc. It really is a family tragedy and needs a contemporary Shakespeare to write a dramatic history making sense of it, like the play Charles III by Mike Bartlett. Lots of opportunity here for screenwriters!

So, I’m sure @skieurope will correct any inaccuracies , but here’s my understanding:

All four of the Queen’s children, including Anne, hold honorary military titles that entitle them to dress in uniform at occasions like funerals. Same for William, and it used to be true for Harry until, as we know, he lost his honorary titles when he stepped down as a working royal.

In contrast to Harry, Andrew retained his honorary titles when he agreed to take a leave from his royal duties due to the Jeffrey Epstein controversy. So theoretically Andrew could dress in Vice Admiral’s uniform at the funeral, but ** allegedly ** he created a fuss by wanting to dress as an Admiral, a promotion he had agreed to forego. (Apparently, by order of the Queen, Andrew gets “promoted” in line with what would have occurred if he had stayed active duty.) Apart from the promotion issue, it wouldn’t surprise me if some at the Palace wondered if it was really a good look for Andrew to appear in full uniform given the circumstances of his withdrawal from active royal duties.

All of this has nothing to do with Harry and Andrew’s actual military service, which entitles them, like any normal veteran, to wear the medals they earned on their suit coats.

You are correct on the factual portion. The supposition about who wanted to wear what and what honorary rank they should hold is speculation.

I recall a humorous article written in a Ladies Magazine right after Harry was born. The author was penning a letter to Diana on the birth of her 2nd child, and it was about having multiple children, sibling rivalry, etc. the part that had me chuckling was when she was discussing sibling rivalry and said “wait until Harry figures out he gets an allowance, while William gets…England”

Such a lovely candid photo of Elizabeth and Philip in Scotland that was just released. And so poignant to read her first statement about the volcano that is just “I” instead of The Duke of Edinburgh and I. It is amazing that she is carrying on with her duties despite being newly widowed.
