Big Salary but no Savings or Retirement looking to get into the Ivies

Hi Hammerman123,
What you may not realize is that if your DS had only been accepted at 1 Ivy League college, you may not have had as much “leverage” with that particular Ivy’s FA office. What many old time CC’ers know is that Ivys generally only consider other Ivys to be their “peers”. They could care less if a tip top student/ athlete gets a better FA offer or merit scholarship from a slightly lower ranked university, because it is not considered a “peer”. Your son was very lucky to be a recruited athlete that multiple Ivy schools ended up wanting. Your perseverance in trying to get FA from Ivy schools would probably have come to nothing if that had not been the case.

You point is well taken and is why we kept the process to only within the Ivies. We did our home work and knew they could care less what Stanford or Duke or Notre Dame could do for us. However, the reverse is true. The non Ivies trip over themselves to get talented kids who are being heavily recruited by the Ivies.

Not so much with Div I athletic powerhouses looking for the biggest, fastest athletes in football, BBall, waterpolo, BaseBall, etc. Other sports that dont fill stadiums and coffers, more colleges may want the Ivy level athlete too.

These schools aren’t going to violate rules for any kid.

Well, they probably would be violating rules if they continue to give you lots of aid, year after year for four years, when the total earnings will be a million dollars. Aid is supposed to also consider FUTURE earnings…**and your family has the potential of earning $3M over the next 12 years. **

There are many of us full-pay parents with kids on Ivy League teams that when someone makes a big deal about our child’s “athletic scholarship full ride” (yeah, right) simply reply that he got the family foundation scholarship.

Translates – the bank of mom and dad are paying the freight, but I can understand that it might be misconstrued.

Try Stanford. They seem to like athletes (don’t know if they give aid though).
