DD is accepted at UGA, but has always thought she would be more comfortable at a school of about 5,000 undergrads, versus 25,000. (She has acceptances to those, too, including GCSU) Has anyone experienced the same? Would being in UGA Honors have an effect on that, assuming she is accepted there?

The only way she’s really going to know if the school’s too big if she tries it out first or if when visiting, she’s really uncomfortable with the size and amount of people she sees. But honestly, I came from a private high school where my graduating class was 86 people to UGA where my chemistry class alone had 200+, and it never really phased me. Why? Because I sat in the front. If you sit close to the front, you won’t notice how many people are actually in your class. Also, after a while, you get stuck in one place on campus, so it seems small You’re not going all over campus, so the campus seems smaller. You also start seeing the same people, so you’re not actually seeing all 25,000 people all the time. And then everyone starts to look the same…and then you just start to ignore everyone Or, at least that’s me.

It might take a little adjustment, but there are perks that come with being a bigger school (more resources, more diversity, etc). If she takes honors classes, her class size dramatically drops (most classes have less than 20).

The only bad part about a big school is too many people who have to get on a bus to get to class. Short person, crowded bus, and having to stand up? Yeah…I’ve had to hold on to a few bookbags before.

Oh, and just to add, if she’s worried about her relationships with her professors, then tell her it’s up to her if she wants to be a number or if she wants to get to know the professor. Many of them have office hours, and I’ve had quite a few profs complaining that no one goes and they just sit there and twiddle their thumbs. You have to take the initiative to seek them out. But most of the time, they are more than willing to be available to you for help.

jenmarie, you’re post helped me so much! I’ve been wondering if I should really go to UGA because of just how HUGE the school is… but lately I’ve been thinking it would be alright. Reading your post reassured me all the more. I’m pretty sure I’ll go there now :)
