The majority of the honors kids I associate myself with from my high school end up at Georgia Tech or UGA, and seeing as how I am not an engineer type person I'm looking into UGA.

I toured a few colleges last week (Mercer, GSU, and Valdosta). I decided that Mercer was too small for my liking, Valdosta was beautiful but I'm not sure if its as academically competitive as I prefer (average ACT of only 21), and I didn't really like the location of GSU as it was in a small town away from city life.

I think UGA fits what I want as an academic challenge, but I'm worried I won't fit in because I do not drink.party/smoke. I can also be shy as people tell me I'm unapproachable, but I want to make new friends in college and try to be more outgoing. I also know I do want a decent sized school so that's why UGA has become a top choice.

Do you think I will fit in at UGA and is there a good social scene that doesn't party?

And if you have any other suggestions of a good academic, decent sized, city school in the southeast?

(By the way, if it matters I want to major in biology or psychology and then go to grad school for a masters in Occupational Therapy so that's another reason why I prefer a more prestigious, recognizable college)

UGA is massive. There are plenty of people here that don’t party. Also, the people who do don’t really pressure you to drink or smoke. You may feel pressured by yourself, but literally nobody is telling you to drink or smoke. Most people here respect everyone’s decisions!

UGA is a great choice! I see you visited Ga Southern but maybe you could also try Georgia State which is the city vibe you may be interested in. However, it is not that academically accredited in comparison to UGA and does not have the prestige.

All in all, if you can get into UGA and you like the school, go for it! Just be aware of their admissions statistics and keep up the good school work!

UGA has a pretty strong biology and psychology departments. GRU offers a Masters in Occupational Therapy and tons of students from UGA go to GRU for grad school.

I originally went to GSU, (Georgia State University, they own that abbreviation) but I decided to transfer to UGA my sophomore year.

After attending both schools, this is what I can say. Academically, at least for Computer Science, GSU is better than UGA. GSU’s CS program has a more rigorous curriculum and it more closely follows Georgia Tech’s.

That being said, UGA is a better choice for me. It is a nicer, more inspiring place to be. It provides a traditional college experience, which I really wanted. Also, black culture is dominate at GSU. It really alienates white students, which is probably why I’m finding it much easier to enjoy myself and make friends at UGA.
