Big THANKS to everyone who recommended PITT

Just want to take a moment to acknowledge the collective wisdom of this board!

Thanks to everyone who suggested adding a rolling application to Pitt for my DD.

Fits lots of her requirements (urban, research, possible accelerated med, Honors College, possible merit aid).

We just got the acceptance and while she will still be applying to other schools…it is a huge psychological benefit to have one college that is right for her already confirmed. She is confirmed for Honors College, being considered for merit, and waiting on the GAP information.

So thank you college confidential posters!

Excellent!!

IMO, there’s nothing as good at relieving stress as having that first acceptance in your (D’s) back pocket. Congratulations.

If you are of our generation (boomer) where Pittsburgh was the punch line of a joke, it is ASTONISHING to visit now and realize what the tech and health care revolution has done to that city! The kids I know who have gone to both Pitt and CMU have terrific lives both on and off campus! Tons to do, thriving art scene, great internship opportunities, etc.

OP- so happy it’s worked out so far!!!

We visited Pittsburgh (the city) a couple of summers ago, as a family. We were very impressed at all that it had to offer. If either of our kids decides to go there for college, we would not be disappointed.

I learned about Pitt and it’s rolling admission from CC during my oldest child’s college search. For my next child I recommended that he apply to Pitt in Aug just to get an acceptance under his belt early on. We had never visited and I was doubtful he would even consider going to an urban school. I thought just the psychological benefit was worth it. Once he was accepted, we visited and he ended up really liking the school. It’s one of his top choices! He is applying to other schools but the pressure is off. Thank you CC!

My daughter got her acceptance to Pitt Nursing at the end of September the year she applied. She would have been happy to go. Michigan was her first choice but she was very unstressed about whether she’d get in. When she did, she didn’t accept right away still considering Pitt. For social reasons, she felt Michigan was the better choice. for her. She’s happy there. But we were very grateful for the rolling admissions and the stress it relieved.

We are in similar boat. Our senior has applied and reasonably expects to get into Pitt any day now. Once we visited and everyone liked the school and the city and determined that fit and affordability were good - huge chunks of schools fell off the list. A great feeling!

Congratulations and good luck with merit. Pitt is a great school and it’s always great to get an acceptance before the holidays.

@CValle We loved Pitt when we visited this past summer and my D18 was so excited to get her acceptance in September including the Honors program and guaranteed admissions to grad school. Now the nail biting wait for merit…we need them to come through and my daughter will 100% sign on the dotted line. My sister attended Pitt back in the day and to see how the city and college have just flourished and grown is so wonderful. Good luck to your daughter and huge congrats on the acceptance!

My daughter is in the same boat! Her interests were evolving during our Pennsylvania trip and that was the first time she was able to articulate an interest in Pharmacy. We were supposed to go to Bucknell, but I stretched the truth and said “Pittsburgh’s just a weeeeeee bit further. Let’s go there instead.” Neither of us had ever been to Pittsburgh and it was a WOW. Particularly liked the health sciences vibe and the urban location with a real campus. To have an admission by November 1, with a grad school guarantee totally changes the tenor of senior year. Fingers crossed for a reasonable fin. aid/merit package.

Congratulations, @CValle, @pct3,@AmyBeth68, and @RelocatedYankee, excellent work by your children. Congratulations to all of them! It is indeed a relief that your children got early admission. Good luck for merit aid.

@blossom

Add Duquesne to your list of Pittsburgh colleges. Our kid almost went there.

Pittsburgh is a fabulous city…and parents…it’s a foodie heaven. Lots of terrific restaurants!

@tamarix Thank you!
@pantha33m After his Pitt acceptance, his list went from over 12 to less than 5 - huge chunk!

@CValle —have you visited yet? Pencil that in if at all possible and soon! Pitt will say they don’t consider interest but they really do.

@carachel2 We live abroad and will only be able to visit schools she has been accepted to. Luckily she was accepted without a visit!

Congratulations! That was one of two of my eldest son’s safety schools because he really liked the city of Pittsburgh. He got a full tuition scholarship there, but didn’t get the full ride (which he really needed), and he ultimately went elsewhere, but we were impressed by all that Pitt had to offer.

@CValle — I should’ve clarified. I meant more for merit consideration. However, I see you met a local Rep at a college fair so I’m sure that’s a great way to show interest. Best of luck!
