Are bikes available for yearly or semesterly rentals? Does anyone know the cost and are bikes a convenient mode of transport during all seasons?

Thanks

There always seem to be bikes for sale on Craigslist. I would imagine that buying a used bike would be a better deal than renting one.

You can bike most of the year. Even when it snows, the snow usually melts within a few days (sometimes within a few hours). Ice is a bigger concern (melted snow often refreezes overnight and makes some walkways slippery).

UVA is pretty bike-friendly. Definitely have a lock of course, but I was a bit of an idiot for never bringing my bike down to Cville while I was there. Though considering I lived on Madison Lane my last two years, I was pretty close to everything I was involved in.

Oh yeah, and it makes no sense to find a bike to “rent” (even if you could). Just get a cheap one off of Craigslist like Dean J said.

Awesome, thanks Dean J!
Anarchy Bunny, since I’m an international student, do you know if there are places where I could store the bike in-between semesters?

not to derail this thread or hijack it from the OP, but how is bike security there? as in, is there a risk of getting my bike stolen if i use a regular cable lock with a combo as opposed to a more secure U-lock?

In general bike security is pretty good, a regular lock is alright, but you never know when bike thieves might decide to show themselves. Therefore the better the lock the safer you’ll be.

You will see a lot of non-students at night the first few weeks of class because a lot of first years forget to lock up.

ive left my bike unlocked at various places before for maybe 3-4 hours without any problems… but it is also b/c my bike isnt that flashy (no disc brakes, etc, etc)

However a friend of mine with a very expensive bike (disc brakes, full suspension, etc) makes sure that it is thoroughly locked everytime. There have been incidents where he comes back to his bike with the front wheel loose as if someone tried to steal it, etc.

lesson learned - bike security is fine, just bring a peace of crap that works. No need for $$$ or a lamborghini bike
