bikes for freshmen?

upperclassmen, do you recommend that freshmen buy bikes? why or why not?

I’m an incoming freshman, but I can already tell you that it would be a really good idea to get a bike. It’s the best way to get around campus. Get an old one, like a used one, so it won’t be so appealing for bike thieves. And put a basket on it, so you can carry everything. I don’t know if you’ve been to the campus, but there are like a million bikes there, EVERYONE uses them because they are so convenient.

I forgot how to ride a bike. Haha. Hopefully walking isn’t a big deal. I’m in Santa Cruz and so far none of my classes seem like a far distance.

should we get a bike before school starts and take it to ucsb or buy one over there? how much are used biked in iv?

if you don’t have a bike rack or someway to transport it to sb, then it’s probably best to wait and buy it to save space. i haven’t checked out any of the iv bike places personally, but i know at k-mart (which is really close by) you can get one for like $100.

what kind of lock should we get?

u-locks are pretty much the way to go.
if you have a nice bike and/or are really worried about getting your bike stolen, some people use a combo lock with a u-lock and a cable. the only downside to that is it takes a bit longer to set up before classes when you may be in a rush.

and you can get those at a walmart, right?

yup. i think i saw one on their website that was like, $15.

u-locks are weird…

plus, they usually only lock the tire to the rack: how many tires have you seen locked to a rack with the bike missing???

lol, yeah. but i once almost got my bike stolen because i had a cable land some people were trying to cut it. they would have succeeded if a police officer hadn’t happened to pass by and see them. i ended up buying a u-lock after that.

i’ve heard from my friends that there are abandoned, free bikes all over the campus left by people who graduated and didn’t bother to sell them. i’ve never noticed any of those tho.

Are the bikes sold in IV pretty cheap? I don’t want a new bike because I’m afraid it’ll get stolen, so I’m wondering if there are cheap/used bikes in IV? If so, which stores?

the shops in IV

only use them for emergencies

Why would you say that, keltix? Idk where else to find cheap used bikes. There aren’t really any cruisers up in norcal.

so does anyone know how much they cost in iv shops?
