Bikes n' Weather que's.

I can get either a cruiser bike or a mountain bike for real cheap, so I'm unsure.
And I know that people say it's all about personal preference, but I would just like some input.

What types of bikes are the most common at UCSB?

What type of bike are you bringing or brought? And why?

And if I didn't have a bike with a fender, should I get some?

What's the weather usually like? Does it rain often? If so, how often?

Thanks to all that respond.
I know that there are other threads like this, but I just added a few questions.

I just think Beach cruiser look weird, so Im taking an old mountain bike.

It's usually like 70 degrees. it will feel kinda cool if you're used to WARM weather.

i just bought a mountain bike yesterday from target and the reason was that it was the cheapest one lol

Personally, I'd stay away from the beach cruiser only because if I need to hurry across campus for any reason, I have a lot more faith in a mountain bike to get me there on time. Like you said, its personal preference, but it seems like a mountain bike is more functional.

- What types of bikes are the most common at UCSB?

1) Most people have beach cruisers
2) I had a beach cruiser with a fender that I got at K-Mart and biked back to IV.
3) Weather is about 65-75F year round. We get occasional rain in the winter quarter months but it's usually very little.

Lol
The bike mentality, from what i hear is, everyone has a janky bike because it's less likely to get stole. It makes a lot of sense. So theres a lot of of rusted paint chipped beach cruisers.

As for me im bringing a road bike, because that's all i have.

dude, i bought a really sweet bike and i got it stolen twice it sucks so make sure that it isnt something that you are attached to (lke dont spend a lot of money on it)

they say that everyone gets their bike stolen at least three times :)

mountain bikes > Beach Crusier . Its not fun biking up hills, etc early in the morning or when you're tired and its a lot quicker.

Does anyone know what happens during rain with the bikes with no fenders? Do people buy temporary ones?

lol dude there are like no hills in sb

There aren't any hills in Isla Vista or Goleta, but if you venture out further, there's plenty of hill places (like the bike path to downtown SB).

And Calvinator, some people walk, a lot of others just don't go to class when it rains.

rc251 it is soo true hahaha whenever the rain gets really bad like no one ever shows up to class hahahha i remember once where the prof. didnt even come.
prob bc he knew the turnout would be low.

how does the rain affect bikes??????

a lot of the bikes don't have fenders, so the water will splash all over you hahaha.

Beach cruiser, mountain bike, you see them all, probably in equal amounts. But yeah, that's good advice to make sure it has a fender, otherwise you'll most likely get what they call the "freshman stripe" which is a stripe of water up your butt and back from where your own wheel flings water at you. I thought a backpack would guard it....it definitely didn't, haha.

^haha wow i didnt even think about the water splashing thing! thanks for the heads up..
