It seems that most students use bikes as their main source of transportation around Cal Poly. Any recommendations on a good bikes? Anything to stay away from?

stay away from beach cruisers, unless its one with gears, but still i would stick to a mountain or road bike because their are hills everywhere. I lived in the dorms last year and rode a mountain bike, which i would recommend because of the nice trails back in poly canyon.

Definitely get a bike. You might find gears helpful, but I don't see them as a must. If you're curious, there is one route which people usually avoid due to its steepness (perimeter rd. from campus market -> redbrick dorms). Even so, road / mtn / cruiser are fine and seem to be equally popular.

I would advise against getting something expensive though, esp. if you live in the dorms. Unless you plan to keep it inside, your bike will take a beating from the weather and other careless folks using the racks. You also risk getting parts stolen, which is unfortunately very commonplace. I hear the thievery situation is even worse in the off campus apartments.

If you do insist on getting something nicer I'd recommend going for something used on craigslist. I wouldn't wait to buy one @ SLO, though; being a college town, SLO's listing hardly ever has any cheap deals

can you keep your bike in the room? I found out today that I will be rooming in a triple.

SDK, how did you find out you would be in a triple? I thought we didn't find out about housing until the 20th

someGuy1215...called about paying for my classes and they were reviewing my account and told me that I will be rooming with two others..that sounds like a triple to me. No names were given at that time..Will still have to wait til the 20th.
