BILD1/2/3 Books

There are 2 sets of book for BILD1/2/3. Which one you recommend and Why?

1) *3 Biology Bunlde (text W/mastering Biology+ucsd Portal+i-clicker Rebate), 9 Edition, 9781256364283

2) * Biology W/ Mastering Biology (no Returns If Code Used), 9 Edition, 9780321558145

Thanks!

I don’t know what the UCSD Portal is, but I just bought the textbook by itself when I took BILD 1 last year. Also, you would probably need to buy the iClicker too for class participation.

adl0816,

1) Where did you buy the iClicker? At UCSD bookstore?
2) Whom did you have for BILD1? Patrick, Gentry and Kiger, Amy will teach this Fall.
Whom do you recommend?
3) Among BILD1, BILD2, and BILD3 which one is the hardest and which one is the easiest and Why?

Thanks!

iClicker you can buy at the bookstore. Or anywhere really, it’s used throughout many universities. Expect to shell out at least 30-40 bucks for it though.

As for the books, the first one is just a bundle and the second one is the book by itself.

oh? the BILD textbook bundle doesnt come with the workbook/studyguide/study card thing now?

well the first one is the textbook, a cd/online version of the textbook (called the mastering biology), plus a $10 iclickr rebate. i dont know what the ucsd portal thing is. wasnt in my bundle last year…i think.
scratch that, i look on tritonlink, seems the ucsd portal was…idk what it is though.

the second is just the textbook and the cd/online version.

i suggest getting the first. because i looked at tritonlink, and it costs less than the second option.

so, might as well get the bundle.

and the $10 iclickr rebate is nice, because even if your BILD class this quarter doesnt need it (like when i took BILD 3, i didnt need an iclickr for bild), youll use it in other classes (like the chem6 series)

I bought my iClicker on Amazon, because it was cheaper than buying at the bookstore, like most items.
I took BILD 1 with Prof. Tour, and I didn’t take the 2 or 3 yet.
You can check each of the professor’s ratings on ratemyprofessor.com

I thought BILD 3 was harder than BILD 2 which was harder than BILD 1. They were all pretty similar in difficulty though and I guess it could depend on your professors too.

Is it okay to just use the 8th edition instead? Someone told me the text will most likely to be the same but just different pictures… I found a cheap 8th edition for only $38. Also, I was just wondering if the access code within the book is reusable for MasteringBiology ( because the previous owner may have used it )

^I can’t say for absolute certain but it PROBABLY is okay.

@hellojadey

when i took bild3 in january, prof. woodruff (idr the exact spelling, i think he heads some bio department?) said previous versions are ok, but try to be within one or two editions of the current one (i.e. if 9th ed is required, 8th or 7th is ok). he said they just rearrange the chapters and sometimes adds/removes some pictures…and if there was a big difference he did say so in class (like one time, there was a picture with an asian boy in it in the 7th ed, and in the 8th it was an asian girl instead…when i took the class the 8th ed was required fyi).
but ya know, with everything, do at your own risk. in woodruff’s bild3, the tests and stuff were nearly straight from the lecture slides, which he provided online.

and im pretty sure you cant use the mastering biology code if the previous owner has already registered it…unless he gives you his login information (maybe he can change the email and pw? then give you the info and then you change the pw again? idk)

Hi ucsdlee,

How is prof. Woodruff?
Do you recommend himz?

Thanks!

i definitely would!
he’s pretty great. he has a good personality (rather upbeat).
his curve was pretty amazing. bumped me up a letter grade and a half (and my grades for each midterm/final were pretty much the same).
shows you stats about grades (like how your class does on tests, how his last class did, how two classes ago did, etc…). it gives you a good insight into how youre doing and what grade you can expect (since it was rare…for kids to get A’s on tests typically). some that didnt get a’s on tests still got a’s in the class i think?

idk, but i would take him again. quite a friendly guy.

i had him for bild 3, and theres quite a bit ofmaterial to cover. but following his lectures, and then reading those sections in the textbook wouldve sufficed. he gives excellent study guides for the exams.

to be honest, youre probably not going to use any of it that much. I’d say, just buy the textbook at the bookstore (since they just started using the new edition so you probably cant find a used one) and an iclicker somewhere online. you really dont need the bundle…

as for level of difficulty for the courses, i thought bild 1 was pretty easy, bild 2 was slightly harder. bild 3 however, is evolution (which is unrelated to the other courses and you can take it whenever). I thought it was hard just because its pretty bland to me. Usually for non science majors, this class isn’t too bad. But like me, if youre more interested in the molecular stuff and dont really give a crap about plants and memorizing taxonomies, its not going to be a walk in the park.

but all in all, just dont fall behind and you’ll be fine.

so we don’t need the mastering code for biology classes? is it like Aris where it’s really necessary? I’m planning to buy the eighth edition without it and i’m worried if i will need the mastering code in the future.
