binge drinking.

So don't kill yourself.

Duh.

jesus mighty nick, pull it out already, doesn't it hurt to have something so far up?

MightyNick:

And I have little respect for people who insist that anyone who does not share their particular value system is "pathetic."

No one is arguing that binge drinking is healthy. Rather, individuals place regard for health differently on their priority list. For some, living five years longer or ten years healthier is not a fair trade for the enjoyment drinking provides. Is that my choice? No. But I know some very, very intelligent and productive people who do make that choice.

Drinking, even to intoxication, does not necessarily harm anyone other than the drinker. And to the extent that the person is hurting only themselves, drinking is a legitimate choice to make.

Screw this, certain people just live longer. My great grandmother for example smoked (different from drinking but whatever) EVERYDAY for probably 70-80 years and she lived to be 101.

Oh really? What about drunk-driving and other alcohol related incidents (you know the ones I'm talking about).

Wouldn't you like to know.....?

This topic reappears each year with a new group of students and parents. A couple years ago one student poster advocated heavily for the social benefits of drinking and how even heavy drinking was fine as long as the drinker knew their limits ... and then he died in an overdrinking incident. Can any old-timers remember the poster's CCname ... and can they point to the thread in the archives.

The user was lucifer11287...

People should definitely read through some of the posts in the original thread as well as other threads discussing his death and his attitudes about drinking.

OK, someone's going to get angry at me for this, but my reaction on seeing that intense irony was literally to laugh out loud. What a ****ing idiot. Has to be some kind of Darwin award + irony bonus for lucifer.

What about them? Don't drive, don't do dangerous things, and binge drinking doesn't cause any harm.

In reality, it predisposes people to doing stupid things, but binge drinking alone will not directly cause, in and of itself, these things to happen, absent some kind of additional stupidity on the part of the drinker (aka lucifer :P).

So, MightyNick, since you seem so concerned with health, a couple of questions:

How much red meat do you eat?
How many calories do you eat per day?
Do you ensure adequate intake of Omega-3s, flavinoids, anti-oxidants, etc.? Do you use supplements to get more adequate intake of the aforementioned?
Do take multivitamins, drink vitamin-fortified milk regularly? Do you ensure above-required vitamin D and other cancer-fighting vitamin intake?

I could show you some people who I guarantee lead far, far healthier lifestyles than you do. The point is, there's always someone who leads a healthier lifestyle. The difference is, most of them aren't immature university students talking big and judging based on that fact.

I'm not advocating a healthier lifestyle Mr. Know-it-all. I'm just saying college kids who drink excessively on weekends/party hard are completely immature.

I don't care what all of you say. That's not gonna change my opinion that binge drinkers are stupid.

There has to be a reason for you to think that it's immature. However, I suspect that you really don't have a reason, and are simply a person who has never really taken part in the kind of groups that drink a lot, and so do not know what they're like. Is that accurate? If so, you really don't have the experience or authority to judge. If it is not, what is your reason for thinking binge drinkers are immature?

Finally, I'll make one point: many of the people I know who drink heavily on occasion are far more mature than the staunch non-drinkers I know.

What do you mean I don't know what they're like? I'm not the anti-social freak that stays in his room 24/7.

That's because you might be one of them. I don't get how you can call binge drinkers mature, because heavy drinking = irresponsible behavior. Nice logic.

I have a very tight knit group which I hang out with very frequently. Some of us drink, others do not. The only time you see the difference in on the weekend. Binge drinkers are not inherently worse people.

drinking causes people to do immature things that these so-called mature people wouldn't normally do when they are sober

But the fact that they drink that makes them do immature things makes them immature.

Some of my friends drink too, but they won't get drunk until the point of absolute stupidity. The ones that do, are inherently worse people.

Define absolute stupidity. Just curious what limit you set it at.

Just look in the mirror for 10 seconds.

I begin to think that MightyNick is a troll. If he's not, he's just really not very good at debating things intelligently.

Do you know what binge drinking is defined as? 5 or more drinks on one occasion, for a male. I don't know about your friends, but it takes me at least 4 times that to get drunk to "absolute stupidity". So by your standards, I'm not being immature when binging, because just the fact that I'm binging doesn't mean I'm extremely drunk. Funny, that.

On another note, you can judge drinkers as much as you want - but unless you've got some kind of concrete reason to think that they're worse people than you that's not just to do with some personal morals of yours, you're going to look like an arbitrary idiot to the rest of the world. Remember, there are lots of people who have been binge drinkers who have accomplished more than you ever will, and who are considered better people than ever will, as well.

I would read all of what you wrote and debate this topic seriously, but I do have a life out of CC.

so says the person who seems to have a response to every other post in this thread. i see great irony in this statement.

i guess you don't need to be drunk to be immature

I do not even know how to respond to MightyNick's comments.
