My college son hadn’t seen Season 3 so I happily re-watched it along with him over the holidays, being that annoying person who says “oh this next part is so funny…” Also he watches everything with subtitles which I hate, but I did find things I’d missed the first time through making it even more enjoyable.
I don’t use subtitles unless I have to - with Derry I had to!
Do you mean dubbed? If so, hard no. I LOVE captions.
Captions are our thing. Both my kids learned to read proficiently before age 5 with no instruction of any kind and my SiL who is a reading specialist is convinced it’s because we hav e always watched tv with CC on.
We started using captions because H is partially deaf. I can’t do without them now myself. What a difference.
Also I think Derry Girls is a gateway to captions show for many people!
We first watched the final season of Derry Girls on an Aer Lingus flight. Between engine noise and my hearing disability (and lack of captions) I missed so many funny lines that I picked up on when we re-watched the season after getting back home.
We just loved Parenthood, and I’m glad you did, too. I’ve actually rewatched the last episode a few times. It’s always tough to end a great series, I feel so lost.
Have you watched Brothers and Sisters? That’s a great one, too. I actually binged it again after several years and enjoyed it the 2nd time around as well. I normally don’t do that.
I’m hearing impaired also. Plane movies can be so frustrating and I can’t even watch them if they are not closed captioned. Have you ever been on one of those tours where they give you headsets to wear to listen to the guide? They are really comfortable as the small padded disk sits up against your ear instead of in them. I wear HA, so don’t find earbuds work so well, but those touring ones are great!
I’d love to find them for planes.
I watch for the clothes, Paris and mostly Sylvie. She’s great! Emily is boring, definitely my least favorite character. I like Luc and Mindy. The story itself is silly.
Ok, I’ll try again. I have watched the first 3 episodes and can’t understand why it’s loved so much.
Yes, my mistake, dubbed, English option, and I do use captions always, too
The first episode of the first series of Derry Girls is very well done and funny. If you don’t like it, I do not think you will like the rest.
Like any show, Derry Girls is not everyone’s cup of tea. My family and most of the people (not all) we recommended it to love it.
Like @abasket , we rank this show one of the best tv shows we have watched.
Huge Sylvie fan here. So much more interesting than Emily. They should give her a spinoff.
Agreed! I’d love that show.
I watched a little of Brothers and Sisters when it came out. Sally Field, right? But that might be a good one to put on a list to fulfill that “family drama” niche for me.
I wasn’t so sure when I first started watching it. I really - even with captioning - had to get used to the accents, the humor and the point of the character development. As the series goes on there is much more humor, character development, testament to friendship and some poignant history moments that really make it special.
Probably a show that would have never made it on network television but a streaming success.
I’m actually in that place right now again with another show that my son and DIL INSISTED I watch - Reservation Dogs. I truly had no idea what to expect. I think I’m 2 (3?) episodes in and I’m intrigued enough that I need to watch a couple more. But not totally sold yet.
I watched the first two episodes of Derry Girls and love the show. I really appreciate this thread! I’m watching more TV since I broke my wrist and need to rest it a lot.
I have single sided deafness due to an acoustic neuroma diagnosed and treated 34 yrs ago. 100% hearing in one ear, 0% in the other. Since it’s due to nerve damage in my brain, hearing aids would offer no help. No stereo hearing, so unless I’m looking at the sound source I cannot tell where it’s coming from. Background noises like on a plane make it tough to discern what’s being said.
YES, those Vox Boxes, etc., used on tours are great! I can choose to place the ear bud in my good ear, it doesn’t block other sound, and I don’t miss a word!
Hey, I have an acoustic neuroma, too! Diagnosed 15 years ago and had Cyberknife radiation at Stanford with Dr. Chang. My hearing loss isn’t bad at all for the most part in the AN ear, he did a great job and I was just lucky too. It was perfect before, though. However, in the other ear, I’m profoundly deaf, not totally, due to they think a virus from 25 years ago. It just very slowly got worse over the years. Why the AN couldn’t have just been in that ear is bad luck.
My HA’s are a godsend, but I still use CC when I can.
I’m sure your doctor has told you devices that can be used for single sided deafness. There is one called the CROS HA. If you haven’t, you need to google that. I used to frequent the AN forum board and read lots of great things about those. If I ever go completely deaf in my non-AN ear, I’ll have to go with those.
A co-worker and I were discussing Derry Girls and laughing so hard we were practically crying. Another co-worker later told me she started watching it because of our discussion but really couldn’t get into it. To each her own.
My issue with captions is that I feel like when I’m staring at the words, even though I’m a fast reader, I miss the corresponding facial expressions, body movements or other physical interpretation of the words that enhance the scene. I try watching the scene first and then glancing at the words but I have to make an effort because my eyes are always first drawn to the words. I’m a reader - signs, t-shirts with slogans, etc. always draw my immediate attention so it may just be a very hard habit for me to break. Ideally I guess I’d watch one time through and then again with captions.
