Hello everyone, I just failed my first bio 101 exam. Its the first out of 4 this semester. Should I freak out and cry my chances are ruined for med school before they even begin? I blame myself, I didnt study.

If you really want to make med school happen, study hard, bring your grades up, do well in future classes, and get involved in some ECs that you enjoy.

If you reflect on this and decide that one failed exam is enough to discourage you, then I suppose that med school is truly not for you.

First, did you really fail the exam? Or did you just come out of the test and decide you failed? Alternately, did you get a C+ and call that failing? I'm just trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Second, if you really did earn an F on the test, can you explain why? Why didn't you study? Did you think you understood everything? Did you think you could do well without studying? If you can figure out the real reason why you didn't do well, then you can figure out how to improve.

You should take a look at the grading syllabus, as well. I know my bio class was graded on the basis of both lab work and exams, so it was entirely possible to bring up your grade a bit by doing really good work in the lab section.

Basically, I wouldn't resign myself just yet. :) You are in a serious position, but I think it is possible to recover. You may not get an A/A- this semester, but there's also next semester. That being said, I completely agree with celestial605 - if one failed exam shatters your self-confidence and discourages you from working, then you should seriously reconsider applying to med school.

I'd be lying if I said I've never seen someone change their major after one test (though at my school it was usually Chem...the bio 101 lab made people quit too).

Everyone has already posted good advice so far. Learn from this expreience, don't let it happen to again, and do whatever you can to pull a B from this class. And even if you don't get a B, all is not lost. Both BDM and myself got C's in a couple of science classes, and still managed to graduate and get in on our first tries. Is it the best way to go about it? No, but it happens. Part of being pre-med is perseverance.

In fairness, it should be noted that BRM and I (BDM) both scored higher on the MCATs than one might expect given our GPA's, so that helped considerably.

what did you two score? If you dont mind sharing.

I actually do sort of mind sharing, because kids on this board tend to get a little neurotic. My point is simply that bad grades can - to some extent - be compensated for by MCAT scores.

I understand, thanks for the information. I appreciate it.
