So I am a bio and computer science major going into my junior year in the fall. At the current pace I will have 4 years of research under my belt when I graduate in a ecology related field. I love ecology but I also love computers so I figured I should just do both and was told that computers would be a good compliment to anything! But as I look to figure out what I want to do with my life after graduation (grad school is kinda a must) I am realizing my bright hopes for my future aren’t as great as I thought… I have been looking at a few different areas to go into for grad school; bioinformatics, systems biology, other sorts of purely biology based topics and have been reading forums related to these topics. I have come to the conclusion that anyone that follows that field either hates their decision or says that as long as job security and money aren’t really your thing, you will love the science aspect of it.
Thinking deeper into this I have thought about going the medical route of either purely md or something pertaining to biomedical technology, but I feel like my bio degree would be pointless in this aspect. Another option I thought about was a phd/md program where I do some biomedical technology research and then get my md.
I guess what my deeper question is that what can I do with my majors that would make money and use both of them so I don’t feel like I wasted a ton of money getting a degree that won’t get me a job? The best part about all this is that there are absolutely not people for me to talk to about this at my school, as most professors are in the ecology area and from what I have gathered from both them and other sources, is very difficult to get into.
Thanks in advance!
