I know prospective Bio majors need to apply before January 1st. I was just wondering when Bio majors are notified of their decision. I put psychology down as my 2nd choice, would I find that one out any sooner? Thanks :)

Hey! I am currently a freshman bio major and if I remember correctly I found out online that I got in sometime in March/April (sorry I can’t remember exactly!) As far as I know you won’t find out any sooner because of your 2nd choice. I think they notify everyone who applied for bio around the same time regardless of who gets into the bio program and who doesn’t. Good luck and if you have any more questions just ask!

If im not accepted as a Bio major is it very hard to get your second pick?(Mine would be Psychology)… and would it be hard fufilling the pre med requirements? I heard TCNJ is excellent for pre-med.

No you should get into your second choice no problem. As far as fulfilling the premed requirements it really depends on the major. With something like psych you should be able to do it .You’re given 5 electives and you can always minor so you should have enough room to fill in the classes you want/need. I know someone who is majoring in english but is following a “premed track,” and really that just means they’re taking science classes that will prepare them for med school. TCNJ does not have a “premed” major but they will definitely advise you as to which courses you should take

Yeah, it’s not too hard fulfilling the med req even without being a bio major. If I remember correctly, it’s just 2 science courses w/labs, gen chem I and II, orgo I and II, physics I and II, calc A, and a choice between discrete, stats, and calc B. Of course, if you have AP credit, it becomes even easier.

Wow, thanks guys! You both helped a lot :). I just have one more question - I know besides taking the required classes for pre-med, pre-meds are strongly urged to get involved and do volunteer work etc. You said TCNJ has good advising… are they able to help students get involved with a lot of research/resources even though its not a very large school?

Yes! I have been to two seminars so far that talked about how to get involved in research…TCNJ has its own summer program known as MUSE that you can apply to and work with a professor on a research project. Also if you check out the science department/biology web page there is a link to an area all about internships and research oppurtunities.

This is a slightly off-topic question, though still on the bio major - how difficult is it to get in as a bio major, anyways? I heard that last year all the bio major spots were filled with ED acceptances. How many spots are there in the program?

I believe bio is the most competitive program to get into in TCNJ, and I heard there are around 130 spots. I’m not sure if there were a lot of the spots taken by EDers this year, but I know a bunch of bio majors that got in RD.

I got in RD so that is definitely not true that all were ED and yes i think they said there are approximately 125 bio students this year

I remember reading in the Star-Ledger that all Bio majors had been filled by ED last year. So HazelEyez is proof that you shouldn’t believe everything you read!
