Biology Major

I'm stuck between choosing to attend TCNJ or Rutgers for biology. I don't want this to turn into another Rutgers vs TCNJ thread but want to know about the bio program. Yeah I've heard from my tours and stuff that it's good, but if anyone has some firsthand info to share it would be much appreciated. Like what really makes their program better for my preparation for medical school than another institution's?

Dunno about Rutgers but TCNJ’s biology program is probably one of their best. There shouldn’t be that big of a difference between the 2 though. Both most likely will prepare you equally well for med school.

I’d base it on:

 1. Do you like big classes or small classes? Big university vs. small college. Pretty much where would you be happier.
 2. Which one is cheaper

Although I would assume that Rutgers has a greater course selection. However, based on my experiences, TCNJ teachers are generally very approachable, something that small classes allow for and something Rutgers may not have.

Are you currently a student in their biology major? If so do you find the classes challenging?

Yeah, I’m a biology major. First semester wasn’t too difficult, took 2 sciences, themes in bio and gen chem. This semester, taking 3 sciences, I’ve been doing somewhat worst, but I think it’s because I didn’t study for the exams enough rather than difficulty of the courses. Of course it also depends on the professor.

Thanks your input

I was a former bio major and I’ve got a lot of friends who are Bio majors. It’s one of TCNJ’s best programs, its very intense and bio majors need to get their **** straight to do well. But it’s worth it in the end, I think theres no comparison with the small attention you get from this school. Lemme tell you my personal story, I was struggling in my bio class (I was thinking about switching majors so i was paying less attention to the work) and the teacher worked with me to schedule help and test re-take days and whatever other stuff could be useful. I doubt you’ll see that at Rutgers.

Thanks also bdmet2491. I’m really leaning towards TCNJ after all of the good things I’ve heard about their biology program and the individual attention you receive there. I also love the environment after visiting a few times. All that’s left is waiting for that fin aid package
