Bio Postgrad Soul-Searching

Hey guys,

I've been looking for avenues for some post-graduate advice and it seems like CC is a pretty reliable and user-friendly academic forum so I figured I'd share. I'll cut to the chase, very appreciative of any words of advice.

I graduated in May 2011 with a B.A. in Biology and a Business Studies minor. I had a GPA just under 3.0, but was heavily involved at school on top of my course work. I started a surf club at school, directed a weekly service based initiative downtown, and was a student ambassador/liaison responsible for tours and working school events (volunteer). On top of this I worked 6-8 hours a week in the mailroom at school to maintain expenses. Although my GPA may have suffered a bit due to all the involvement, I established an incredible network and poured my heart and soul into the institution I attended.

Because I transferred in, I had to take summer classes during my sophomore and junior year summer to stay on target and graduate on time. Although I sometimes wish I took the opportunity to get an internship, another semester in school would have been incredibly costly. Definitely weighs heavy on my mind though.

I didn't have the opportunity to study abroad, so I worked all summer to save up for a trip to New Zealand where I spent a month and a half working odd-jobs and trying to see what I could of the world before I committed to a career path. I intended on a trip for 3-6 months, but work for travelers wasn't panning out, so I'm home a bit early.

I'm living at home now (big adjustment), a little confused and removed from the network I'm so accustomed to having around me at school but doing a bit of soul-searching. I'd like to go to graduate school and had dabbled with the idea of green business before, but that would be about a ways off. I had the opportunity to do some marine biology research 2 years ago but don't know if I could see myself working in a lab for the rest of my life. I'm thinking of just applying to internships to get some experience and a better sense of what I'd like to do. Just lacking a bit of passion and a spark at this point.

Thanks for whatever you can offer.

Only 40% of adults who graduated college within the last 2 years are employed full-time. You are not alone out there.

What’s the source of that statistic? Just wondering. If so, that’s pretty depressing. A lot of my finance and accounting friends are working in Boston/NYC already but they’ve had set plans since obtaining internships junior year.
