I’m currently a junior in biochemistry, and I don’t really want to stop pursuing my major because it’s quite late. Does anyone know what schools offer a biomedical engineering or chemical engineering MS that will accept an undergraduate degree of biochemistry? Are there any programs I can get into or top schools I can research and email about? How difficulty would it be to go this route?
I had always thought that you can only do grad level Engineering only if you have an BS in Engineering.
Bioengineering is one of the areas where people can (and often do) come from non-engineering backgrounds. I went from an undergrad in neuroscience to bioengineering grad school. I would recommend looking at the websites of various programs that might interest you to see what pre-requisites they have for the program. Often, they’ll explicitly say that they take students from non-engineering backgrounds, especially those with a bio-related background. Beyond your biology-related classes, the things they usually look for that you might not have is math classes. Specifically, they often look for multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.
@nanotechnology is 100% correct. I got my BS in molecular and cell biology, and later ended up getting an MS in mechanical engineering. While searching for graduate programs, though I looked primarily at ME programs, I did also look into a number of BME programs. Most ME graduate departments I encountered considered applicants from non-engineering backgrounds. Every single BME graduate program did. You will still need multivariable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra, though, at the least.
@mick5000x - I have a son who is a junior in Texas A&M’s aerospace engineering program, so I thought that I’d check TAMU’s requirements since I am relatively familiar with the engineering college web site. It looks like they could admit you into the masters program but they would require “leveling courses.” Here’s a link: http://engineering.tamu.edu/biomedical/admissions/graduate-admissions/leveling-courses
